Description: Scenic photographs of New Zealand taken by R.H. Bartlett, photographer who was working in Auckland circa 1875 to 1880. At the beginning of the album there is a fold-out page, opening into four full-sized photographs. Most of the images are of North Island scenes, including some of Maori groups outside whare, meeting houses, and a school with thatched walls and roof, and a view of the Maori pa at Ohinemutu. Most of the other views are landscapes, including the Pink and White Terraces, the Whangarei and Waitakere waterfalls; and hot springs at Lake Rotomahana, the Champagne Fountain at Wairakei, and the Crows Nest geyser at Taupo. The South Island scenes are all around Milford Sound, with views of Mount Pembroke, Harrison Cove, and Mitre Peak. Source of title - Title supplied by Library Quantity: 1 album(s). Description: Album of photographs, all taken by Charles Spencer, in the Rotorua District around Mount Tarawera before and after the volcanic eruption of June 1886; except the last photograph in the album. This was taken by an unidentified photographer, showing "Waitangi Falls where Treaty with Maoris was signed". The views of Mount Tarawera showed the area before the eruption, including the village of Te Ariki, at the head of Lake Tarawera, the Pink and White Terraces, Lake Tarawera and Rotomahana. Views after the eruption showed the first group to ascend Tarawera. This was Percy Smith's party, of which Charles Spencer was a member. These images show the damage done to the village of Te Wairoa, the Pink and White Terraces, and showed the enormous changes to the landscape, including the rift which developed between Mount Tarawera and Rotomahana. Description: Photographs of New Zealand, taken by various photographers. Some are unidentified, but many are taken by the Burton Brothers, J V (James Valentine), Tuttle & Co, for Simpson & Co., and Hart, Campbell & Co. In the North Island, a large number of photographs show the area around Mount Tarawera before and after the volcanic eruption in 1886. There are a number showing the huge deposits of mud and ash which covered the area, with views of the landscape and of ruined buildings, followed by scenes of the Pink and White Terraces, before the eruption. On page 8, there is a view of Ranana (London), on the Wanganui River with the caption, "Maori village similar to those overwhelmed by the eruption". Other scenes in the North Island were taken in Auckland City, Ohinemutu, Rotokakahi, and Whakarewarewa, Ti Eke [i.e. Tieke] on the Wanganui River, and one of Wellington City taken from Mount Victoria. South Island views include many around the main lakes, including Wakatipu, Wanaka, Manapouri, Queenstown and Hawea; Milford Sound and Mitre Peak; the Otira Gorge; Kawarau Gorge and Bridge; Oamaru; Port Chalmers; and Dunedin. Views of gold mining areas in Otago include excavation sluiced out by hydrants at St Bathans, and the miners' towns of Naseby with the river choked with tailings, and Nokomai. Terraces album 3

Description: Photographs of New Zealand, many taken by Robert Henry Bartlett. Several of these were taken in Nelson, one showing Fairfield House, and one interior view of a room (on page 50) with the pencilled caption "Fell - Nelson". Possibly in what is now named Warwick House which was built by Alfred Fell in 1854. However pages 19 to 31 contain photographs taken by Josiah Martin in the Rotomahana hot springs area including the village of Te Wairoa, and the Pink and White Terraces before the 1886 Tarawera eruption. The album contains 53 pages of which 32 to 49 are empty. Pages 51 to 53 show scenes relating to Florence (Italy), one of the city, and two showing art works (one a relief carving in the Campanile di Giotto, "La logica"). Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). Travel in New Zealand

Description: Transparency slides of Mr E G Williams' (Edmund Gardner Williams') travel in New Zealand in 1959. This sheet of slides includes a view of Lake Okataina with Mount Tarawera; the Waimangu thermal area including Frying Pan Lake, Gibraltar Rock, a small terrace, and the buried village at Te Wairoa; the Huka Falls; the hydro dam and village at Atiamuri; the dam lake at Maraetai; Karapiro dam; and Mount Pirongia. Slides on this sheet are numbered 377-407 with gaps for those removed for lectures on New Zealand. Arrangement: Mr Williams transferred slides (nos. 381-382, 386-389, 391, 405) showing Gibraltar Rock at Waimangu, steaming cliffs at Lake Rotomahana, Mount Tarawera, launch on Lake Tarawera and the buried village at Te Wairoa. These were taken as part of a representative collection on New Zealand for various lectures which he gave when he returned to England. The lecture series are filed in later sequences. Martin album

Description: According to the inscription inside the front cover (by an unidentified person), the date is firmly established as 1884, however the album has a number of photographs of the Tarawera area, both before and after the volcanic eruption in 1886. These include views of the White Terraces, one of which has a group of Maori cooking food in the hot pools; a carved house at Te Wairoa, showing interior and exterior before the eruption, and the exterior afterwards; a group of Maori at Te Ariki (one of the places most devastated in the eruption with the loss of many lives. This image has the inscription `Natives of te Ariki first to be killed by eruption'); views of Mount Tarawera covered in mud and ash; and the Old Mill, destroyed in the eruption. Many of the images have the signature initials J.M. (Josiah Martin), and a few have the initials F.A.C (Frank Arnold Coxhead) who may have taken them, but which may just have been printed by him. The last few views are in Tasmania, including Burnie - Emu Bay, and the Guide Falls, near Burnie. Inscriptions: Album page - `Ex libris Brent Gration-Maxfield. 1967'; Album page - `New Zealand. 1884.
