Description: A church combining elements of Maori and Gothic Revival architecture, with Maori carving (kowhaiwhai) above the door and on the bargeboards (maihi) and front supports (amo) and two lancet windows at the front. Description: The left half of the page shows a wooden dwelling house thatched with raupo with a fence, a gateway, and an unusually long ridgepole. Below it is the end of another house (a cooking house) made of wood with a tekoteko (carved figurehead) at the top of its ridgepole. Both buildings are at Tu Kaitohe or Kaitoke Pa, Te Wherowhero's pa at the foot of Taupiri Mountain, Waikato The right side of the page shows at the top, two figures seated opposite one another and crying (the tangi or crying match). Below they are 'pressing noses' (hongi) and at the bottom of the page, they are hugging. Beside them is a sketch of a pole, three feet long, with white feathers 'wound into scarlet things'. Description: The journal begins in March 1858 and ends in November 1858. A note, 24 years later, describes her revisit to Kohanga and gives a brief historical summary. The journal describes life in Auckland, a voyage to Tauranga on the cutter `Hope', and visits to mission stations there and at Maketu, a trip through the thermal area and back to Auckland through Thames, the Waikato and Taupiri. Eliza Jones describes Maori life and conditions, flora and fauna as well as many of the people she met on her journey, including Archeacon Brown, Rev Volkner, John Kinder and Thomas Chapman, whose poem `The rats' lament', about the Maketu rats, is given in full. Description: Contains letters from Maori to Governor Grey with regard to land tenure (reservations, subdivisions, payments, and warnings about false claims), and with regard to mail delivery during the time of the New Zealand wars; also contains a lengthy letter to Grey from the Wairarapa Runanga repudiating a land sale by Wi Kingi Tutepakihirangi because he was not an owner of the land that was sold; letter confirming arrangements between Grey and Te Runanga o Ngati Toa, acknowledges his authority and expects Grey to honour their agreement (?). Includes letter from Horomona Pohio requesting financial assistance to build a church, which would double as a school, for the people of Ngati Huirapa and the education of their youth. Includes letter from Ropata Hururmutu informing the Governor that Ngati Toa retain the authority relating to Motuhara, Hongoeka & Haukopua (lands about Plimmerton), some of which are leased to Mr Levy, on behalf of their children; letter from the Muaupoko elder Te Rangirurupuni to Governor Grey about letters requesting payment from Ngati Toa for their lands; and letter from Tamaihengia requesting formal recognition by Grey of the Ngati Toa "Runanga". letter from "Nga Runanga e rua o Whangaehu me Mangawero", by the Ngati Apa, requesting the Governor Grey should come and visit them. Description: Album compiled by Spencer Perceval Talbot Nicholl when he was serving with the 43rd Oxfordshire Light Infantry during the New Zealand wars. The photographs were chiefly taken by John Kinder and by Daniel Manders Beere, in the Auckland, Waikato and Bay of Plenty areas. Many of the views have no captions, but can be identified in comparison with images known to have been taken by these photographers. Views identified include Mr. Ashwell's church at Taupiri (Rev. Benjamin Yate Ashwell); thatched buildings; flagstaff at Ngaruawahia; the monument to the 43rd Regiment at Gate Pa near Tauranga; Potatau's tomb with a sentry guarding it; a carved stern-post of a waka; and a group of Maori men.
