King, William Cutfield, 1829-1861 : Diary

Date: 1850

By: King, William Cutfield, 1829-1861

Reference: MS-Papers-4424

Description: Diary covers the period 30 April 1850 to 20 July 1850 and gives an account of the journey King took with McLean during this time. It describes the overland and river journey from Waitara to Wellington, on to the Wairarapa and then back to Taranaki along the coast, with comments on people met and places visited. Source of title - supplied title Relationship complexity - Holograph transcript in T W Downes' hand at qMS-0630 William King was the only son of Captain Henry King and came to New Zealand when he was quite young. Receiving his education in New Plymouth, he took up farming on a considerable scale at Woodleigh. He married Elizabeth Mary Richardson in 1855. In 1857 he was elected to represent Omata in the Provincial Council. During the war in Taranaki he held a captain's commission in the Taranaki militia and in Nov 1860 he was elected to represent Bell and Grey in Parliament but he did not take his seat as he was killed in Feb 1861 at Woodleigh. Quantity: 1 folder(s) (32 leaves). Physical Description: Holograph (photocopy) Provenance: Diary was purchased by the Canterbury Museum as part of the A H Johnstone collection. Johnstone was a bookseller and it is suspected he obtained this diary from T W Downes' estate. It appears that T W Downes wrongly attributed this diary to Major Brassey and a holograph transcript of this diary in Downes' hand is part of Downes, T W `Whanganui River stories and Major Brassey's diary, 1850' (qMS-0630). Downes has written `Major Brassey's Diary, 1850' on the front page of the original King diary. Canterbury Museum provided Alexander Turnbull Library with a photocopy of the original.
