Williams, Edward Arthur, 1824-1898 :Mouth of Patea. Waitotara. [1865]

Date: 1865

By: Williams, Edward Arthur, 1824-1898; Stack, James West (Rev), 1835-1919

Reference: A-210-002

Description: Shows the mouth of a stream with sea beyond. Horses and soldiers in the foreground. Very similar to version at B-045-034 with title in the artist's hand 'Alexander's farm, looking seawards from base of hill on which we were camped, 23 January 1865'. Alexander's farm was on the Mowhanau Stream, South Taranaki, not the Patea River. Appears not to show the mouth of the Patea River, despite the title on the front. Title is not in the hand of the artist. The river shown is a shallow fordable stream and the cliffs on both sides do not match those around the much deeper Patea River in the 1860s. May show the Waitotara, but much more likely to be the Mowhanau Stream, as in the related work at B-045-034 Other Titles - Alexander's farm looking seawards from base of hill on which we were camped, 23 January 1865, Mowhanau Stream [alternative title] Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - Mouth of Patea [in ink, not in the hand of the artist]. On verso, in pencil, in the hand of a former staff member, possibly copied from a mount: [A E Williams] [sic] [Waitotara] Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Physical Description: Pencil and wash 137 x 227 mm Provenance: Collection of James West Stack. Transfers: Transferred from Stack papers, Manuscripts and Archives, 1970s or early 1980s.
