Description: The papers, transcribed and compiled by John Morgan's great-grandson Robert, include extracts from his diaries and reminiscences. They relate mainly to the 1850s and describe life in Wanganui and Taranaki during this decade, including farming, economic activitity, travelling between New Plymouth and Wanganui and relations between the settlers and Maori. Also included is a description of a trip made by Morgan in 1853 droving sheep from Kai-Iwi to Taranaki published in the `Hawera star', 10 Aug 1935 and a brief talk about John and William Morgan given by Robert Morgan. John Morgan was born in Dorset and emigrated to New Zealand in 1849 aboard the `Berkshire'. After a brief period in Taranaki he settled in Wanganui. Description: Chiefly family letters from William Bolland, first minister at New Plymouth, 1843-1847; and from his wife Jane, after his death. Also two letters from Bishop Selwyn, and one from John Morgan, Wanganui to Rev W E Bolland, Norfolk, England, dated 1910 Included are three letters by William Bolland to his mother Sarah Bolland. In two of them William describes his happiness at having married Jane Wright. They were married in 1841, and sailed for Taranaki the same year. In three letters written by Jane from New Zealand she describes their arrival, life as a clergyman's wife, her home, and nursing her son through an illness. Description: Photographs of New Plymouth and district, including Mount Egmont, and a sequence of views of Parihaka (including the campaign of 1881). Scenes of Parihaka, especially with relationship to the 1881 incident, include views of the pa (with Te Whiti's house visible); the Rahotu volunteer camp, the Rahotu Redoubt; Fort Rolleston; Sentry Hill; Pungarehu officers' quarters and redoubt; Nelson Camp; the Taranaki Rifles and Wellington Navals. Scenic views in the area show Mount Egmont, Bell's Falls, the `Meeting-of-the-Waters', White Cliffs, Sugar Loaf Islands, the New Plymouth breakwater, and views of the New Plymouth Recreation Ground.
