Description: The papers consist of: Application form submitted by Leonard Willaim Jury, great-great-grandson of the original owner; history of the Jury family. This history was compiled by Len Jury, ca 1985 and includes a history of the farm as well as information about the William Bryan, the Battle of Waireka, reminiscences related to the family and local history. Copy of article by NZ Historic Places Trust entitled `Archaeological investigations: Jury and Autridge farmsteads, Omata' (2007) The original owner was Elizabeth (nee Hoskin) wife of Jesse (Justinian) Jury. She purchased 46 acres of the Omata Block from the Plymouth Company in 1847. The Jury family arrived in New Plymouth on the `William Bryan' in 1841. In 2007 Leonard William Jury and his wife Heather owned the property at Omata and were awarded the New Zealand Century Farm and Station award to mark over 100 years of continuous ownership by one family. Description: Includes a preface and translation in S P Smith's hand with a note: `A large part of this has been embodied in "Hist. and Trad. of Taranaki Coast"'. There is also a covering note signed by W H S (W H Skinner) on the provenance of the ms with a genealogy of Teira Whatakore attached. Also includes letter from T M Hocken to Smith, Dunedin 1 Jun 1893, forwarding books and precis of copies or extracts of Colonial Office material, Sep 1835, on the `Alligator' and J Guard affair. The manuscript gives a biographical account of Wiremu Kingi Matakatea, with whakapapa, with much information about his role in conflicts between Taranaki and other iwi, and between Taranaki and the Government in the first Taranaki campaign (1860) in the New Zealand wars; the document also discusses the shipwreck `Harriet' and the treatment received by the survivors; there are also translations of the material. Description: Comprise Meade's journals on the Esk and Curacao, botanical, biological, meteorological and and scientific observations, sandal wood, and the journal of a tour from Auckland to Taranaki 1849-1850 by Governor Grey Source of title - Transcribed Brenchley first visited the Pacific in 1850 with the French traveller, Jules Remy, during his American tour. He later visited New Zealand in 1864 with Lt Herbert Meade RN, and involved himself in Maori affairs. From Sydney he visited Pacific islands in the Curacoa in 1865 and the Esk in 1866. Description: Comprises a whakapapa of Warea area people, April 1862, in Maori (10 pages); a 19-page text of 43 waiata, dated 4 Feb 1866 (by Ropata Ngarongomate?); a further transcription of 50 waiata in Maori hand, possibly from Taranaki area; a 7-page account in Maori of the stories of Kae and Maui; an account of the activities of Wiremu Kingi Matakatea; and a document titled 'Maori house' which lists names of the figures depicted in the pou of 'Te Hau ki Tūranga', a whare built by the Ngāti Kaipoho tribe "to the memory of Tamata Waaka Tuangere [Tamati Waaka Mangere], the elder brother of Raharuhi Rukupo who designed it". This whare was built in Turanga (Gisborne) in 1842-1843. In addition to the above Maori writing the folder contains a large empty envelope with a pasted on note in Smith's hand listing previous contents, some of which are now to be found in other folders; a Taranaki whakapapa with a note by Smith saying it was given to him by Mr Jackson, Native interpreter at New Plymouth, Jun 1910; a drawing of a sailing canoe and miscellaneous photographs and other documents.
