A New Zealand Company survey cadet, he assisted with surveys of Wellington (1842-1845), Otago (1846-1847) and Nelson; also worked on Canterbury Association surveys (1849-1851) with Captain Joseph Thomas. He later practised as a surveyor in Canterbury and was active in provincial and national politics.
