Description: Shows a profile portrait of a three-masted sailing ship flying two flags from its mast tops. There is a steamship in the right distance, and Pencarrow Head and lighthouse in the left background. This painting was probably commissioned by the ship's three Wellington owners, or the Master Captain James Lee. The "Poneke" was built in Evans Bay, Wellington, in 1878 by John Rees George. She was 79.98 gross registered tons. Her length was 84.5 feet and beam was 18.9 feet. Initially registered at the port of Wellington on 19 March 1878, with her Master recorded as Stephen Ellis. She was owned by John Rees George, Civil engineer, 1878; Archibald McLeod, timber merchant, 1878-1880, William Waddell, Timber merchant and William Weir, timber merchant. Presumed to have foundered at sea with all hands (6) as she was not seen since being sighted off Greymouth. She had sailed from Onehunga on 11 June 1880. Description: Shows two scenes: in the top half 'Leaving Collingwood for Nelson', the small steamer "Lady Barkley" is being loaded with trunks, while the passengers walk on board along the gangplank behind their trunks. In the lower half 'Last ride in Nelson', two women mounted on horses, walk towards a gate in the left foreground. The foreground fence has a row of barbed wire for its top wire. On the right, faintly sketched in, is part of a house, with a garden archway alongside. Description: The steamship Taranaki alongside the Picton wharves, circa 1870. Taken by an unidentified photographer. The `Taranaki' was built in 1865 by Blackwood & Gordon of Glasgow and operated by the NZ Steam Navigation Co, Wellington from 1865-68. She foundered on Boat Harbour Rock, Tory Channel, on 19 August 1868 but was raised in September 1869 and refitted for service. She was wrecked at Karewa Island on 29 November 1878. Description: Two of the Tetley boys, (Cadwallader and either the oldest, Willy, or the youngest, Frank) watching from the Picton Wharf while one of their horses is winched onto the deck of a steamer, and the other horse waits its turn. The artist also comments 'The busy people of Picton stand on the wharf admiring with hands in pockets' of the group of men and women also standing on the wharf, waiting with boxes. Description: The steamship `Penguin' on Wellington Harbour. Taken by an unidentified photographer between 1864 and 1909. Inscriptions: Photographer's title on negative - bottom right - S S Penguin. Wellington The `Penguin' was built by Messrs Todd & McGregor, in Glasgow in 1864 and was operated by the Union Steam Ship Co from 1879. In February 12, 1909, she struck a rock in Cook Strait, foundered, and 75 lives were lost. Description: View of the patent slip at Evans Bay, Wellington, looking north from the harbour, showing the steamship Grafton and the schooner Julius Vogel (obscured) on the slip, and a small steam vessel on the hard alongside. Photograph taken ca 1880 by an unknown photographer. The photograph was taken on the same occasion as 10x8-1825-G, possibly in late 1880. The Grafton is recorded as stranding at the Buller river on 12 May 1880 and the Julius Vogel at Waitara on 31 July 1880, the only incident recorded for this vessel in New Zealand waters. Source of title - Title supplied by Library Inscriptions: Mount verso - The P.S. Mountaineer ready for launching at Lake Wakaitipu. This vessel was built in Dunedin by Kingcaid & McQueen Engineers - 1885? It was built at the works in Dunedin then dismantled into sections, conveyed by road to the Lake and re-assembled at Kingston.
