Description: View looking out to sea, across a landscape heavily eroded into chasms by water, with a waterfall on the right and a fishing pa with low huts perched on a cliff-top to the left, watched by two Royal Artillery soldiers on the left. A copy of a watercolour by E. A. Williams, the present location of which is unknown. Exhibited in 'Wide-Eyed: Early Images of New Zealand' exhibition of works by settler artists, held at the National Library of New Zealand Gallery, 18 July - 9 November 1997. Description: Soldiers within an earthen rampart, with two standing guard, gazing out across a plain towards low hills. Within the shelter of the rampart are several tents, two with soldiers reclining inside them, one with a standing soldier leaning against it, and another seated soldier in front of it, smoking a pipe. Three rifles are stacked upright together in the centre. Probably a South Taranaki scene, the drawings are mounted in the album in chronolical order and those immediately before and after are of Taranaki Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Description: View looking north up the beach towards Mount Taranaki and the cliffs of South Taranaki, with foot soldiers marching and cavalry ahead and to the right. The watercolour is a copy of a watercolour by Colonel Edward Arthur Williams held by the Hocken Library and entitled A stroll on the beach - Mt Egmont in the distance, 16 February 65. Description: Looking inland towards a range of hills and mountains, including Mount Taranaki at some distance, with a small unoccupied canoe and a dinghy with a sail carrying three people from one bank to the other. Two more small boats further up the river, and, in the distance, a house and a row of cabbage trees. Likely to be a river in South Taranaki, or North of Wanganui, although not as far north as the Patea River, given the small size of Mount Taranaki in the distance. Possibly the Waitotara River. Description: The interior of a hut, with a soldier reading and smoking a pipe, the remains of a meal, including alcohol in front of him. He is seated at a large table, with a form along one side, suggesting that the room may be part of soldiers' barracks. Another room is visible to the left, with a thatched entranceway protruding into the main room.
