Description: Views of Wellington between 1842 and 1845. The top view shows the house of William Wakefield (the site of the Beehive) looking up The Terrace beyond. The central view is of Captain Daniell's sawmill on the Kaiwharawhara stream. A bullock cart is carrying logs to the right, several men are resting in the foreground, there are piles of tree trunks in the foreground, and tall bush in the background. The lowest view shows the bank on the corner of Willis Street and Manners Street with soldiers marching by, from the barracks next door to the bank. Description: A party in the 1860s in a large living room or ballroom. Mistletoe is attached to a chandelier, beneath which is a chair draped with bonnets. Behind the chair is a young soldier in hiding. Four rather plain-looking women are heading towards the lures on the chair, while two prettier women in the foreground have their backs to their would-be swain and any potential kissing under the mistletoe. The soldier may be intended to be a self-portrait and the ballroom may be in Auckland. There are large pictures on the walls, chairs and couches against the far wall, a grand piano and the chair in the centre along with a chaise-longue. The artist was a surgeon with the British forces during the Waikato-Tauranga war of the mid 1860s Other Titles - Artful dodge Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Description: Government troops at Parihaka in 1881. Gudgeon with a group of European men and women on the verandah of Queen Makea's house in Avarua, Rarotonga. King Koroki's funeral in May 1966. Edith Tuke and her Napier house in the 1890s. A man on hoseback at "Wairoro." Soldiers with a field gun. A memorial cross. Two children ca 1905. A sheet of 8 postcards relating to Auckland Other material includes short typed notes relating to Gudgeon; a letter to Beryl Gudgeon from the Auckland Museum dated 1936; an obituary for Mr C R Howden; information relating to Arthur Tuke's career dated 1876. Except for the Auckland postcards, the material in this collection was contained in an album entitled "Gudgeon 1965-1920." This album judging from the captions which were on each page, contained photographs relating to Gudgeon's life. By the time the album reached the Turnbull Library, these photographs had gone and it was filled with an assortment of items, none of which related to the captions on the plastic pages. Description: Three illustrations of scenes in the Wellington area. The top view looks north along the beach (now Thorndon Quay) towards Kaiwharawhara, with several houses along the beach, including the roof and front garden of Major Baker's. The central view, probably at Taita, shows the banks of the Hutt River, with Maori leaving Maraenuku Pā [Makahinuku Pa], overseen by soldiers. The palisades of the pa are to the right, with other buildings and canoes in the distance along the riverbank. The lowest view shows 'The red house' or the Barracks in Thorndon Quay, with soldiers marching up the slope towards them, another house and Tiakiwai Pa (described in Brees' text as 'Jackawai') in the middle distance. Description: Sir William F D Jervois was born at Cowes, Isle of Wight, the son of General William Jervois. He entered the Royal Military Academy in 1837. In 1839 he was 2nd Lieut. Royal Engineers and rose to be Colonel Commandant of Royal Engineers 1893. In 1875 he was appointed governor of Straits Settlements, in 1877 appointed adviser on defence to the governments of the Australian colonies and in July the same year was appointed Governor of South Australia. After five years of successful administration in South Australia, Jervois was appointed to New Zealand, taking up his duties on 20 January 1883. Quantity: 1 b&w original photographic print(s).
