Description: Album probably compiled by the mountaineer and explorer, A P Harper. Harper was also probably the photographer for many of the prints, especially those of mountains and mountaineering. There are Harper and Ackland family photographs which include interior and exterior views and views of the garden, of Ilam, the family mansion in Christchurch. The other main group of photographs relate to A P Harper's activities as a mountaineer and explorer in the Fox and Franz Joseph glacier regions. Some of the climbers active in the Southern Alps during the 1880s and 1890s are depicted. W S Green and his two Swiss guides, and at least one photograph taken by Green during his unsuccessful attempt to reach the summit of Mount Cook in 1882. Fitgerald, Zurbriggen, Mannering, and Dixon were all men that Harper was associated with as a mountaineer. As an explorer he was associated with Charles Douglas, and there are photographs of Douglas, Leonard Cockayne the botanist, and John Roberts of the Westland district survey. There are also many photographs of the mountains, glaciers, rivers, and gorges of the Southern Alps. Some of the English photographs at the beginning of the album may be associated with A P Harper's brother Charles who became an Anglican priest. He may have been the C C Harper who was at Keble College and Cuddesdon theological college, Oxford. There are two interiors of "C C Harper's room at Keble College", and a number of photographs of family groups taken in the grounds of the vicarage at Patea where Charles Harper was vicar from 1894 to 1900. Description: Shows a view of Lyttelton from the Sumner Road, and shows the bridle path well-formed, a sailing ship at the end of the pier, a church with central steeple, several streets and houses. Similar to the work at C-064-001, and probably by the same artist. The church with three gables and a central spire may be the Methodist Church built on Norwich Quay in 1861. (See photo in W H Scotter's history - illustration 16 following page 86; and photo in "Histroy of Methodism in New Zealand", by William Morley (Wellington, 1900), page 429). That church was shifted to Winchester Street in 1866. Comparisons with photographs indicate that there are fewer buildings than there were by 1862 (see photograph in W H Scotter's "A history of Port Lyttelton" (Christchurch, 1968), illustration no 16 following page 86). The watercolour, prior to conservation treatment (before the Library purchased it), had the name R. Dawson on the backing board. This could either be the artist's name, or a framer's note of a former owner's name. An artist called R. Dawson is known to have painted Lyttelton in 1896 and exhibited with the Canterbury Society of Arts between 1892 and 1894. Dated ca 1860 on assumption that the church shown is the Methodist church built in 1860, and by comparison with 1862 photograph, the relatively fewer houses. Other Titles - Dawson, R. John Howard wins another term as Australian Prime Minister on the backs of refugee boat people. Jim Anderton and Bill English look for ways to provide gaurded support for New Zealand SAS involvement in Afghanistan. Shows lions in a zoo with a sign 'Big Cat poisoning Times...' The new rule in Kabul Afghanistan, don't dare NOT to show yourself. Shows a man having his beard removed and a women removing her veil. Both regimes the now deposed Taleban instituted. A bin Laden supporter talks about the perfect weapon they have against the American led attack into Afghanistan. However they have some problems with detonating the nuclear bomb. Factions within the Alliance Party turn on each other and vow to fight to the death. Comment on the increase in alcohol consumption due to the lowering of the drinking age, and expectation that the same thing will happen when cannibis is legalised. Shows the maze of buildings that United States Air Force missiles are trying to penetrate in Afghanistan. The chance of striking a target is pretty low. The Prime Minister is swollowed by a giant snake during a visit to the Amazon. A reporter asks her how the Amazon compares with NZ eco-tourism. Jim Anderton pretends to fire a gatling gun every time the Alliance Party President, Matt McCarten appears on television. Helen Clark arrives home to find the house demolished. Refers to Alliance Party infighting. Shows Jim Anderton and Matt McCarten facing off over the breakfast table. A Black Caps cricket player thanks an African rain-man for helping the team by creating rain which washed out the second test. Jim Anderton reassures everyone that the crisis within the Alliance Party is now over and he and Matt McCarten are now pulling in the same direction. The Alliance boat is now however sinking. New Zealanders make love twice a week on average. A woman comments that it is decidedly average. Afghanistan Alliance soldiers run over Taliban prisoners in an armoured tank. Description: The first ten images are views of Denniston and the Camp under snow. These images include distant views and views within the town showing houses and streets. One image shows coal trucks crossing the trestle bridge in snow covered country side, and another is of the iron bridge in winter. Five images are of waterfalls and scenic features taken along the horse track connecting Denniston with the coastal plain The last eight images are of Westport. One shows a typical villa of the period, another shows the exterior of the Westport Coal Company's laboratory building. There is a view of the railway yards with Denniston coal waiting in trucks. Description: Photographs of trips taken in the countryside, of bridges, rivers, streams, waterfalls, native forest, mountains, coastal scenery and other scenic views. There are pictures of cars and one of a motorcycle with side car. There are prints of two fly fishermen displaying their catch in a net and of a man holding up a large eel. Others show yachts in sail, and men and boys in yachts; adult fun sports at a group outing identified in PAColl-6712-2 as being the "optic championships". Another group are shown playing cricket in the grounds of Days Bay House. There is also a single print of a hunter showing his bag of wild game birds. Animals are represented by cattle and horses, one of the latter associated with two men and a wagon-full of freshly harvested hay, another is harnessed to a coach parked beside a stationary train. A sequence of prints records the dams and lakes of the newly completed Mangahao Hydro in the hills inland from Shannon. Three prints show a ship grounded in coastal shallows. There are portrait and group photographs of people, including children, and one print of a children's party. Several show picnic groups.
