Description: View from Clay Point hill above the junction of modern Willis St and Lambton Quay. The beach in the foreground is lower Willis Street, while upper Willis Street passes up the rise on the far right. The beach in the background is modern Mercer and Wakefield Streets. Cows, goats, two Maori canoes, a couple on horseback and Bethune & Hunter's Stores are in the foreground, with a jetty and sailing ships in the harbour. Further jetties and public and private buildings are in the background on Te Aro Flat. The most prominent building along the waterfront, with a Grecian-style frontage, is the Exchange Building. Mounts Cook, Albert and Victoria are indicated in the skyline above their relevant peaks. From water-colour by Charles Heaphy; engraver unknown. For a key to the identity of individual buildings, see negative 15576 1/2. T. M. Hocken's 'Key plan of Heaphy's View of a part of the town of Wellington ... 1885'. The original for this key is in the Hocken Library Pictures Collection. A watercolour was the original for the lithograph of the same title, published in London in 1842. There were also later prints from the same stone produced during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. See reference number C-026-002 for copies of the lithograph. Description: View at Taupo Point, just south of Separation Point, Golden Bay, showing Taupo Pa with palisades and buildings and a bush-clad knoll beyond, the sea and several inshore islands. Depending upon the extent of Messenger's knowledge, the boat anchored off the beach is probably a Deal boat, and the mizzen was a "standing lug". The foresail was a "dipping lug" (see note below, and letter from Pat W Win, AT 13/14/1, 24 December 1999) A copy of John Wallis Barnicoat's eye-witness drawing "Taupo, Massacre Bay, March 1844", negative 11570 1/2. The original drawing is in a private collection but the Library has a photograph. Probably drawn for James Cowan's The New Zealand Wars, but not used. Two Deal boats and six Deal boat men were brought to New Zealand by the Nelson Preliminary Expedition which entered Nelson Haven in November 1841. One of the boat men was James Smith Cross who became Nelson's second harbourmaster. (See letter from Pat W Win, AT 13/14/1, 24 December 1999). Description: View along the shoreline looking west, with St Paul's against the skyline, and the military buildings to the right above the cliff. Sail boats in the harbour, a steamship moored on the far left and a Maori canoe in the foreground, with a man carrying a load (possibly fish) on his shoulder. This watercolour is copied from one by Hamley's superior officer, E. A. Williams: 'Auckland, New Zealand, 3 August 1864' (Reference number B-032-021). Description: View from Kaiwharawhara, looking across Thorndon Flat towards Te Aro and Mt Victoria. The Hotel at Kaiwharawhara is in the foreground and Hoggard & Simmonds windmill at the foot of Marjoribanks Street on Mt Victoria is clearly shown in the background. Kaiwharawhara stream is bridged and there is a Maori canoe pulling in to the stream mouth. The Mount Cook Barracks, shown as a single large building on top of Mt Cook are also depicted in the background. Simmonds & Hoggards Flourmill was built in 1843. Description: View from a rocky foreshore, with a bush-clad headland to the right, looking across to Kororareka (now Russell) with several houses along the beach at the town and, at the west end, the large hakari built to celebrate the visit of Governor Grey at Christmas, 1849. Rising above the hakari (large food storage platform or scaffolding) is a series of hills with a flagpole on top of the highest hill Compare the wood engraving illustration of the same scene from A. S. Thompson's The Story of New Zealand (London, 1859), with caption Kororareka in 1849 from a sketch by Colonel Bridge. The location of Bridge's drawing or watercolour is not known. The wood engraving includes the carved prow of a large waka on the far right, and another large waka in the water being rowed into shore. Williams' pencil drawing includes a very small waka on the water. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - title in ink Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Sail boats in the harbour, and a wharf in the right foreground with a yacht, crewed by several men. Other men and a woman with two children are on the wharf. This watercolour is copied from one by Hamley's superior officer, E. A. Williams: either 'Fort Britomart, Auckland, 3 August 1864' in the Hocken Library, p. 35 in the now dismantled Williams' sketchbook, with minor changes in some details, especially the lettering on the sail of the yacht; or the Turnbull's watercolour 'Fort Britomart from Queen Street Wharf August 64' (E-510-010/011), which varies the figures on the wharf and does not include lettering on the yacht's sail.
