Description: Photographs of Clarke, Graham and Fyfe who first climbed Mount Cook on Christmas Day 1894, with their mountaineering equipment; the sheep dog of James MacKenzie the sheep-stealer; a bullock team pulling wool bales; the Fairlie to Mount Cook coach with John Rutherford driving; the bridge over the river at Lake Tekapo with the hotel next to it; Mount Cook Station, originally built by A Burnett, with a thatched roof and the family outside it; a drawing of the ferry crossing Lake Pukaki and the original accommodation house on the shore; hay-making in front of the Balmoral homestead; the yard of Haldon station surrounded by trees showing the out-buildings and men with dogs; Levels homestead with a man with a hoe and others outside; and a group of men and women picnicking in front of two tents at Governor's Bush in Mount Cook township being the first party conveyed by the Mount Cook Motor Company ca 1880s. Description: Photographs taken circa 1880s by James Ring, photographer based in Greymouth. Scenes in Greymouth and nearby include views of severe flooding (p 3-5, 7); loading ships at the wharf showing hydraulic cranes raising hoppers of coal, and rolling stock laden with coal for transportation. Three shipping photographs including the SS Gerda wrecked on the Greymouth Breakwater in June 1888; the SS Mawhera ashore on North Beach, Greymouth in 1886, and the SS Rosamond crossing the Greymouth Bar. Beyond Greymouth views include the Grey River, Rocky Island, Brunnerton and the Brunnerton Bridge, and the West Coast Road. Then views of Lake Brunner, Refuge Island and Mitchell Falls. The Teremakau [now Taramakau] River is next, one view showing the road bridge, and one showing the flying fox (wire bridge) leading over to the Teremakau Hotel. These are followed by scenes along the Otira Gorge, including Warnock's Nob, Westley's Creek (Wesley Creek), and Starvation Point, before reaching Porter's Pass, Broken River, Arthur's Pass and the Devil's Punch Bowl Falls. The last sequence show Grasmere Station, Castle Hill Station (with one view of snow gates) and Craigieburn Station; the town of Cass; Bealey, Bealey Hotel, and Bealey Gorge, Lake Pearson and Lake Mapourika. Description: Transparency slides of New Zealand selected by Mr Williams as a representative collection to be used in a series of lectures on his return to England. This group includes both slides Mr Williams took himself, and slides he purchased. This sheet shows a sheep drover on horseback with a pack horse and two dogs herding a flock of sheep near Gisborne; a woman sitting on a tree stump overlooking Lake Taupo and the mountains; fumarole vents near Lake Taupo; the Chateau Tongariro on Mount Ruapehu; a man standing beside the Crater Lake on Ruapehu; Mount Ngauruhoe; a garden in New Plymouth; a distant view of the house "Tupare" near new Plymouth; Mount Egmont; views on the road to Tokaora; railway line running through the centre of Palmerston North; the Manawatu Gorge; a street in Masterton; the Wairarapa plains and sheep farms; a stand of cabbage trees; dry riverbed of the Putangirua River en route to the Putangirua Pinnacles, and a view of the Pinnacles. The slides are not in his original numerical sequence, and are selected by subject relating to particular talks. Arrangement: These slides were selected by Mr Williams from his original sequence to create a representative collection of New Zealand images which he used in illustrated lectures on his return to England. Description: Transparency slides of Mr E G Williams' (Edmund Gardner Williams') travel in New Zealand between 1958 and 1959. This sheet of slides shows coastal ranges, and sheep being driven along a road near Gisborne; Tokomaru Bay; a railcar at Gisborne Railway Station; Matawai township; scenes in Whakatane and the Whakatane River; farming scenes at Holmridge farm at Waihue, near Dargaville, owned by Vernon and Ruth Woods, and a photograph of the Woods family. The family include Vernon and Ruth, and Clive and Barbara Woods, and "young Vern". Mr Williams spent Christmas 1958 with the Woods family. Slides on this sheet are numbered 579-603 with gaps for those removed for lectures on New Zealand. Arrangement: Mr Williams transferred slides (nos. 579, 582, 592, 594-595, 597, 599) showing a view of Gisborne; sheep droving near Gisborne; scenes at Holmridge farm including a group of a truck in a hayfield, and members of the Wood family. They were were from this sequence as part of a representative collection on New Zealand for various lectures which he gave when he returned to England. Description: Photographs of a voyage to New Zealand taken by an unidentified photographer, between December 1912 and November 1913. The first group relate to the voyage, with scenes of shipboard life, including group portraits, harbours and ships they passed, and preparing `treats for 3rd class children'. The latter part of the album relates to the Waimate and Dunedin areas of the South Island. Many of the images are linked with farming, including scenes at `Kinbyran' (possibly Kyeburn?); Deacon's farm; Charley Cornelius and Paul Studholme on horseback; Paul Studholme's home (an arts and crafts style of bungalow); the home of Norton Francis (a stock and station agent in Waimate); `The Homestead' (or Te Waimate Homestead), one of the properties owned by members of the Studholme family; Hilboro (a house and views across paddocks); and a `meet' at Teschemaker's farm, with views of the house, the stables with horesemen and women gathering, and horsemen with beagles. There are three views of races at Dunedin Race-course; views of shark fishing on the beach near Waimate; the Johnson family and their house.
