Description: Survey plan of the Auckland Albert Barracks, showing the boundaries of the barracks extending out to what later became Wellesley St, Kitchener St, Symonds St, Princes St and Alfred St. The barracks are enclosed by a stone wall (annotated note indicates part of the wall still in existence). Within the barracks is the armoury, a school, sergeant's quarters, military prison, Major Tisdall's house, the 'Dead House', large garden, the magazine, store and drill shed. Shows the Military Road, next to Government grounds, on what became Princes St. The 'Northern Club' is indicated on the corner of Waterloo Rd. Indicates building materials. Compiled by R.S. Description: Bird's-eye view of central Auckland - "This view is compiled and drawn as from a point one thousand feet above and one hundred feet to the rear of the Hospital during the year 1885 and part of 1886 by George Treacy Stevens, Auckland, N. Z.". All the streets are named and every building is shown, as well as the wharves and part of the harbour. Grafton Road, the hospital and part of Auckland Domain dominate the foreground, and the view extends beyond St Mary's Bay (West Haven boat harbour) in the north-west, a block beyond Union Street in the west, to the beginning of Karangahape Road in the south-west and to Judges Bay and part of Hobson Bay in the east. Description: View of Devonport school buildings and children at play in the playground and nearby. The boys' playground is separated by a fence on the right of the photograph. The Standard 6 room is the wing facing the flagpole; Standard 4 room is at rightangles; Primers' room is behind, and facing same direction as the Standard 4 room (see diagram on verso of file print). Five girls are in the immediate foreground behind a fence watching the boys in the playground. There is a wharf on the lefthandside of the photograph and St Heliers Bay, Kohimaramara, Mission Bay etc can be seen across the harbour in the distance. Description: View from Parnell with St Paul's School Room in the foreground, behind a small picket fence below a road. The Waitemata Harbour is in the background, with a ship visible and a headland to the right. The photographer is probably John Kinder The school room was in Eden Crescent, close to the first St Paul's Church and was opened by 1853. Kinder arrived in New Zealand in 1855 and the photograph may date from shortly after his arrival. Quantity: 1 photograph(s) on page of sketchbook.
