Description: Shows boys and girls and Mr Monkhouse doing `Public service', clearing flax clumps near swimming bath [at the Friend's School in Wanganui] Scope and contents information taken from note on lower left beneath image The Society of Friend's School in Wanganui was fostered by the enthusiasm of English Friend, John Holdsworth, who became recognised as the Founder of the School, which was opened in Feb. 1920 on 34 acres, with 20 pupils, staffed by Hugh and Annie Goldsbury for its first year. But financial difficulties forced its closure at the end of 1969 and it was later leased by the Education Department as special school for emotionally disturbed boys. Description: Begins with friends, Christmas 1988, and friends feature throughout the album. Also includes - A group on the lawn in front of Government House, Wellington. Interior views of no.13 Upland Road, Kelburn, Wellington. A trip to Ohakune featuring Maungarongo Marae and Tikarina Ringapoto meeting house. People at the Marae include weavers and a carver as the building was being enlarged and the addition decorated at the time. Other people include Jonathan Dennis, his mother and staff from the National Film archive. They are photographed in a group in front of the meeting house. Also pupils and Jonathan and associates with a group at Ruapehu College. Source of title - Title supplied by the Library Jonathan Dennis established the New Zealand Film Archive. One of the projects undertaken by the archive was the restoration of movie films made in the early 1920s during anthropological expeditions to the Whanganui River funded by the Dominion Museum.
