Description: A journal kept by Ranfurly's chief aide-de-camp, Dudley Alexander. Most of the journal comprises his illustrated letters to his sister Alice. This give detailed descriptions of places, various events and travels, people met and observed, historical anecdotes and more as Alexander accompanies the Governor, the Governor's family, politicians and others around New Zealand. The accounts are profusely illustrated with artworks, photographs, newspaper clippings and other mementoes of Alexander's travels. The events and adventures described are: A cruise on the Government steamer `Hinemoa' to New Zealand's sub-antarctic islands, 27 December 1900 to 21 January 1900. Included are sketches by Alexander, plant specimens, newspaper clippings and a photograph of the `Hinemoa'. A March 1901 tour on the Governor's train through the central North Island to Lake Taupo. A April 1901 tour by horse and train from Auckland to Wellington via Tauranga, Kati Kati, Paeroa, Te Kuiti, Mokau, New Plymouth, Opunake and Hawera, with accompanying map and photographs. A December 1901-January 1902 second visit to the sub-antarctic islands on the "SS Tutanekai". On this visit Ranfurly was accompanied by his wife and by the artist C N Worsley. Accompanying the account are sketch maps by Alexander, watercolours by Lady Ranfurly and Worsley, a sketch of an seabird by Dr Wilson of the Antarctic `Discovery' expedition, and a photograph of Alexander and Lady Ranfurly shooting seabirds. An account of a excursion on the Tasman Glacier, 12-16 February with Lady Ranfurly, with a watercolour sketch of Alexander by Lady Ranfurly, sketch maps and photographs. A March 1902 excursion to Mount Cook through central Otago, where Alexander describes the gold fields at length, Alexandra and Dunedin, illustrated with sketches, photographs, a map, and a small gold nugget. A railway journey on the lines south of Auckland, through Waingaro and Cambridge and on to Rotorua and surrounding districts, through the King Country and back to Auckland, accompanied by photographs and newspaper clippings. A drive through inland Victoria, Australia, in November 1902. A fishing expedition to the Opihi River near Timaru. A April-March 1903 expedition on the Tasman Glacier with photographs. Clippings relating to the Antarctic `Discovery' expedition of 1901-1903, with a sketch map by Alexander and a 23 March letter from Edward Evans of the expedition. A May 1903 railway journey to Rotorua from Auckland, with sketches and photographs of Tarawera and thermal areas, and on to Te Aroha and then to Te Kuiti, Waimarino and surrounding areas. Their are extensive photographs of and sketches of the party, the thermal areas and of a Maori whare inspected at Te Kuiti. A February excursion on the `Hinemoa' to Collingwood, Karamea, Westport, Greymouth, and back to Nelson. A journey through the Urewera ranges to Ruatoki to talk with Tuhoe leaders, with extensive photographs of the expedition. This expedition is also covered in a photograph album. Quantity: 1 volume(s). Diary - Sketchbook two

Description: Electronic files comprise the second sketch book of a two-volume diary kept by Dora Foljambe of her tour of New Zealand. The diary continues with the Foljambe family's travels around New Zealand. Setting out from Wellington they head north to Rotorua and Tarawera. The diary briefly details local Maori and their preparation for the Prince of Wales's visit in late April 1920 in Rotorua. There are sketches of local Maori, flora, fauna and landscapes. On 1st May the Foljambe family depart for England aboard the SS Corinthic. Further sketches of shipboard life and seascapes as the vessel passes through the Panama Canal, past Cuba and up the East Coast of America to Chesapeake Bay and Newport, Rhode Island. The last entry is for the beginning of June. Other - Page 30 of the diary was blank, so the donor did not supply the Library with an image of this page. Description: Contains diary entries by Keys re his travels through the Bay of Plenty and Horowhenua districts on business as a Native Land Agent; there are detailed descriptions of the countryside and towns which Keys travelled through, and discussions about the people he met; there are also discussions about Maori practices and customs that he encountered and his impressions of them. There are also notes about native flora and fauna and the liquor trade, and a number of photographs of people (mainly from Te Arawa and Ngati Raukawa), scenery and marae, taken by Keys according to the text (each is dated). Also contains copies of various manuscripts (in Maori) submitted to Keys by Maori informants, and information about the history of Rangiatea at Otaki Also includes stories, written in Maori, from the Ngati Raukawa tribe; "The story of Uenuku-kopako and Kapu- Manawawhiti"; "The death of Tukemata"; and a copy of a letter from Riapo Puhipi (Leopold Busby) about an exchange of gifts between Te Rauparaha and Poroa, a chief of Ahipara. Includes photographs of the old Otaki school house; Kahurangi Taipua; Raukawa meeting house (all on p.73), and Tungia Te Ao (pp.74 & 100). Kingitanga papers

Description: Contains papers about the Kingitanga and the Tariao cult, explaining the origin, theology and activities of the cult, and the place of King Tawhiao in the belief system; also contains correspondence to and from the Kingitanga in the 1880s with regard to Maori political representation, Maori sovereignty, land issues, pardons for Te Kooti Arikirangi and others and the relationship between the Kingitanga and the Government. Also contains minutes from the proceedings of a court case before one of Tawhiao's courts, brought by Tiahuia Reone against Mamae Te Hapi regarding a stolen horse; translation (into Maori) of press reports in the New Zealand Herald and the Weekly News about the 'coming in ' of Tawhiao, and the negotiations that surrounded this; there is also a timeline showing when iwi affiliated to the Kingitanga. There is a copy of a letter from Tawhiao to the Privy Council, petitioning for an investigation into Maori land rights, Maori sovreignty and Maori political representation; the letter is accompanied by a lengthy preamble that sets out the basis for the grievances. There are copies of telegrams sent to and from Te Puea and Maui Pomare with regard to Maori conscription in World War I; there is also a typed copy of a report by Pei Te Hurinui Jones about the opening of Mahinaarangi Meeting House, and an annual report (with accounts) from an East Coast farming co-operative, signed by Apirana Ngata Quantity: 1 folder(s).
