Description: The extracts, 1835-1836, include accounts of mission work and inter-tribal fighting in the Rotorua-Tauranga districts. The 1839 journal describes a journey through North Auckland up to Te Reinga. There is some account of Maori legends relating to Te Reinga Wade came out to the Bay of Islands under the Church Missionary Society. Description: Published by Brett Printing & Publishing Co., 1918. Also other publications, and loose material laid in, which includes correspondence, drafts, photographs, and clippings, which mostly relate to the Tarawera eruption, the Rotorua Region, and Te Arawa. This volume also included some larger maps which have been housed separately (not yet described). Other publications include 'Narrative of the volcanic eruptions at Tarawera, New Zealand, June 10th, 1886' printed at the 'Evening Bell' Office, 1886. Correspondence includes a letter from H Fildes (25 Dec 1934) which mentions James Edge-Barbington, and the Rotorua guides Sophia and Kate, as well as Eric Ramsden. Also a letter from Charles A Cramer, of Onehunga (10 Jun 1936), inc which he recalls his memories of the Tarawera eruption 'like a movie film'; and a letter from Taiporutu Te Mapu (21 Jun 1938) where he is responding to questions that Cowan had sent him, particularly relating to Hinemoa's burial site and other related matters. Description: Holograph letter and photocopy of letter to Mary Lawrence, `My dear little girl', from Iza, written from Sydney in 1910 following the writer's experiences in New Zealand, with Edith Hill, beginning with the wreck of the `Waikare' in Dusky Sound. She writes of Dunedin, Rotorua, Rotomahana, Taupo, the Waikato River, the King Country, and briefly mentions going down the Wanganui River, through Wellington, Marlborough, Nelson and back to Dunedin. In particular she describes their trip from Rotorua focusing on the Gisborne area, meeting with Tuhoe, and the possibility of meeting Rua - which they did. She noted it was a trip few Pakeha women had made. The letter is torn off in the corner with slight loss of content. Also includes an envelope titled 'Captain Mair. My scouting expedition to Poripori. 1867' which contained an incomplete handwritten letter and account by Gilbert Mair.
