Description: Sketched view of river flowing between boulders in foreground, and calmly in background, beneath overhanging trees. Initial colour washes only. Inscriptions: Recto - beneath image - (In pencil): the whole of the front is in light, the centre dark and the extreme distance pale green against which the delicate leaves are shown. Description: Shows the narrow gorge of the Taieri river with a steep bank (Maori Leap) at left, and another headland at right mid-distance. A mountain is in the background. A sailboat with three people aboard is in the right foreground. Name of river assumed, because of other works done on the Taieri River on the same day. The name Maori Leap is no longer in current use. Description: Shows river and riverbed, with three birds (shags?), on branch in foreground. Mountain peaks in background. Probably copied from Hutton, F. W. Report on the geology and goldfields of Otago. Dunedin, Mills Dick & Co, 1875, p.1 A. Heaphy is not known to have visited Central Otago (although the title is in his hand and the style of the drawing is his). In addition, the Library holds an almost identical drawing by William Mathew Hodgkins (A-182-072) and this appears to be the original for the illustration to Hutton. Description: A view of Acheron Passage Dusky Sound through a mist. Shows a boat sailing through the Pass. The ship is likely to be the steamer Maori. Hodgkins travelled through Acheron Passage aboard the Maori on 17 March 1875, and made a pencil sketch closely resembling this watercolour in his sketchbook, reference number E-401-034.
