Richmond, James Crowe, 1822-1898 :Near Takaka. 1870.
Date: 1870
By: Richmond, James Crowe, 1822-1898
Reference: D-035-003
Description: Landscape allegedly shows the artist and his family on a painting expedition, the artist leading his daughter Dorothy Kate Richmond aged nine years seated on a horse, with his wife walking behind. They are making their way down a gentle slope from a wooded area at the left, towards the Takaka Valley at the right. The artist's wife died in 1865, and the figure on the horse appears to be a boy in short trousers. According to the "Dictionary of New Zealand biography", "The family group gathered in Nelson. Richmond and his children went there in 1869; his brother William and his family were living nearby. ... His closest companions were his three eldest children: Ann Elizabeth, Maurice Wilson and Dorothy Kate (Dolla)". It is possible that the figure walking at the rear is Dorothy Kate Richmond, although the figure appears to be older than nine years. Deframed by the Library. Inscriptions: Verso - centre left - [Title]; Recto - On earlier backing paper (retained). 'Suter picture of the month' (newsprint heading); Near Takaka J C Richmond 30 Gns (in pencil). Typed label: 'J C Richmond - water colour - Takaka. s. d. 1870. Purchased from Mrs C Thoms (nee Cynthia Fell) daughter of C Richmond Fell, a former Crown Solicitor of Nelson, who inherited the painting from his mother - a neice [sic] of the artist. The figures represent the artist leading his daughter Dorothy Kate Richmond aged 9 years seated on the horse and Mrs Richmond following. The artist was 48 years of age at the time. 15. 11. 77.'.
