Description: Transparency slides of New Zealand selected by Mr Williams as a representative collection to be used in a series of lectures on his return to England. This group includes both slides Mr Williams took himself, and slides he purchased. The last slide showing the Lindis Pass was taken by Neville Hatwell. This sheet shows parts of Christchurch including the Cathedral, Cathedral Square, the Avon River and the statue of Robert Falcon Scott; the Rakaia River; a signpost on the road to Mount Cook; Lake Pukaki; Mount Sefton from the road; the Hermitage hotel; views of Mount Cook from the Hermitage; a group of people looking up the glaciers in the Tasman valley; a mountain daisy and a Mount Cook lily; and the Lindis Pass. The slides are not in his original numerical sequence, and are selected by subject relating to particular talks. Arrangement: These slides were selected by Mr Williams from his original sequence to create a representative collection of New Zealand images which he used in illustrated lectures on his return to England. Description: Shows a view of a river, possibly the Rakaia, with a mountain range silhouetted in the distance. The light in the painting suggests the sketch was made at sunrise. It is likely that the mountains in the background are the Southern Alps. Description: Transparency slides of Mr E G Williams' (Edmund Gardner Williams'). The first slide shows the house at 48 Hume Street, Crows Nest, Sydney owned by friends of Mr Williams. The next group are taken from a published guide to the Tarawera eruption, some showing the area before the eruption and one of the effects after the eruption. The following slides show scenes on the West Coast and Canterbury. Many relate to geological and rock formations, including Punakaiki pancake rocks, a sample of orbicular granite at Karamea and a high terrace at Karamea, rocks in the sea at Scotts Bay, cliffs on the Rakaia River, and moraine at Franz Josef Glacier. There are also images of white rata, cows heading to milking and on pasture, and a butter factory in Christchurch. The last two images were taken by Neville Hatwell, one of the Tasman Glacier from the air, and one of the road over the Crown range. Slides on this sheet are numbered 746-897, with nos. 756 to 825 (all on Australia) removed for a lecture series which Mr Williams gave when he returned to England. Those removed are filed in a later sequence. Arrangement: Mr Williams transferred slides (nos. 898-899, 901, 903, 905, and 921-922) to create representative collections on New Zealand and Australia which he used in lecture series on his return to England. This sheet of slides includes views of Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers, Gillespies Beach, Revingtons Hotel (Greymouth), over the Lewis Pass by bus to Christchurch. There he shows views of Warner's Hotel, a large Victorian house, a boathouse on the River Avon, a view from the Summit Road, Lyttelton Harbour and Homebush (home of the Deans family at Darfield). From Christchurch views include the Rakaia River and Lake Coleridge. Slides on this sheet are numbered 148A-174 with gaps for those removed for lectures on New Zealand. Arrangement: Mr Williams transferred slides (nos. 149-151, 154-155, 158-159, 161-162, 166, 168, 172) showing views of Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers, Maruia Springs, over the Lewis Pass, views of Christchurch (including Christchurch Cathedral and Cathedral Square, the River Avon and Scott's Statue), and the Rakaia River. Description: New Zealand scenes including thermal areas in the North Island, and river, mountain and roading scenes in the South Island, taken by various identified and unidentified photographers between about the 1880s and 1900s. Two photographers, Josiah Martin and Patrick Thomas Malaghan took most of the images. Other identified photographers include Edmund Wheeler, F. Finch, A.J. Iles, Charles Spencer, Edward Le Grice, J.V. (James Valentine), and Ross (Photographer, Invercargill). Several of the unidentified photographers are listed under their initials only, and include one with the initials T.S.M (or S.T.M. in a monogram), also A.A.B., R.G., Rooney, Luney (?), and L.M. A large number of those taken by Patrick Malaghan show Skippers Road and the Shotover River, with Pinchers Bluff, Huttons Cutting, Hell's Gate, and Skippers Creek. Thermal areas in the North Island show the Pink and White Terraces before the 1886 eruption of mount Tarawera, and also a number taken after the eruption, including the remnants of Te Ariki Pa. A large number also show various geysers, mud pools and hot springs. One method of crossing rivers is shown with the Hooker Wire Bridge (or Hooker Cage) and a "chair" travelling across a wire in Skippers over the Shotover River. Note on this box reads: "1st Ball Hut print" (no. 33); and "J. Martin "Mt Cook"" (no. 66). Most of the places identified are listed above. Other Titles - Old P.O.P.
