Description: A collection of postcards and printed views (possibly from a magazine) of New Zealand scenes primarily of towns and cities rather than scenic views. They include one of two Maori women washing clothes at Rotorua, another of the Royal visit in 1927 and a family group of seven men and three women possibly taken in Belfast. A number of the postcards have been used. Also included are five original photographs which have been captioned with the family connections: a soldier in uniform, possibly named Ralph Ferguson; Uncle Henry Babe's wedding photograph; cousin Violet Bradford in America; Albert and Elizabeth (Eliza) Babe (brother and sister) and four others; Thomas and Fanny Babe (grandpa and grandma) with Eliza, Harold, Albert, Olivia, Queenie and Gladys. Description: Birds eye view of central Auckland - "This view is compiled and drawn as from a point one thousand feet above and one hundred feet to the rear of the Hospital during the year 1885 and part of 1886 by George Treacy Stevens, Auckland, N. Z.". All the streets are named and every building is shown, as well as the wharves and part of the harbour. Grafton Road, the hospital and part of Auckland Domain dominate the foreground, and the view extends beyond St Mary's Bay (West Haven boat harbour) in the north-west, a block beyond Union Street in the west, to the beginning of Karangahape Road in the south-west and to Judges Bay and part of Hobson Bay in the east. They include photographs of earthquake damage to shops in Hastings; the flooding of the Ngaruroro River; excavation of the site of the new swimming pool in Havelock North; a man and a boy sheltering from the rain outside a barbers shop; the Soldiers Memorial Hospital; Taradale Post and Telegraph Office with the library across the street; two men working on a steam locomotive; neon sign on Queen's Wharf, Auckland; wedding photograph of a couple named Harper and Ward (the groom was a minister); five men next to a crashed aeroplane on a snowy hillside; a Windsor chair made from New Zealand birch; schoolgirls leaving Hastings High School; a view across Hastings, possibly from the Clock Tower, over Railway Road and towards St Andrew's Church; two of the Cosy Buildings (possibly previously the Douglas Buildings), one when the picture theatre had the electric sign "Cosy" hanging from it and was showing the film Nurse Marjorie and the other without the sign and with the ground floor closed up; and the new Post and Telegraph Office built to replace the old one after the earthquake. Description: Album of publicity photographs, chiefly taken by unidentified photographers in the 1930s. Many are photographs of posters, artwork and advertisements, all emphasising the beauty of New Zealand, and how easy it is to travel through the country by rail, and by the New Zealand Railways bus and ferry services. Some of the artwork was done by Stanley Davis (one photograph shows the funeral of S. Davis, with the hearse parked outside the funeral parlour in Kent Terrace, Wellington); and by Marmaduke Matthews. (On page 53 there is a photograph of a black and white sketch of Victoria University College, by Marmaduke Matthews). There is a photograph also of the painting of Sir Ernest Rutherford, by Oswald Birley. Photographs of places include a sequence showing the Dominion Museum and Art Gallery in Wellington, with an exterior view with the Carillon, and interior views of museum exhibits, art gallery spaces (including one room containing the Murray Fuller Exhibition of Contemporary British Art), and the tea-rooms. Several views show the exterior and interior of the Alexander Turnbull Library, with Clyde Taylor the librarian in two scenes seated at his desk, and one of a reader in the reading room. Another sequence shows horses, sheep and bulls being readied for transportation by ferry. Two group portraits are associated with the Empire Games, one entitled `Empire athletes', and the other showing cyclist Roy Taylor with a group.
