Description: Describes the massacre of the crew and passengers of the ship `Boyd' at Whangaroa, 1809 and the rescue of his daughter by Captain Berry, 1812 Relationship complexity - Original and water-colour portrait held in National Library of Australia, Canberra (ANL:NK 382) In 1809 Elizabeth Broughton, aged two, and her mother were passengers on the General Boyd, sailing from New South Wales to England. The vessel called at Whangaroa Harbour in northern New Zealand where it was attacked by Maori, and most of the crew and passengers killed. Elizabeth was one of four survivors.
