Description: Cadastral map of the Whitireia Peninsula from Pikiriri peak. Ruratane, Titai [i.e. Titahi] Bay, Mt. Cooper. Rakatane, Koangaaumu and Kohako creeks are named, as is Rocky Bay, all of which are on the Cook Strait coastline. Blocks are named as Koangaaumu, Tom's Grant, Kahutea No. 1 and 2, Onepotu Claim, and include acreages. An old stake fence is marked and a lagoon. The Porirua Harbour is marked. Description: Map of Porirua Harbour, Titahi Bay northwards to Pukerua Bay, and the Horokiwi Valley, Wellington. Shows unnumbered subdivisions of land around the Harbour, Jackson's Hotel, Thom's Hotel and whaling station. Shows several Maori pa sites, including Pa Warakoua on the southwest side of the Harbour, an unnamed pa near Titahi Bay, Taupo Pa and surrounding Native gardens, the Native path from Taupo Pa to Pukerua, Wairaka Pa near Gibralter Rock, and a settlement at Pukerua. Map probably drawn in 1844 or 1845, according to Drawing and Prints. Also shows several numbered views that relate to sketches housed in Drawings and Prints. Note on map before copying: Portfolio D, [New Zealand Company], marked & 4 by ? See 'Plan shewing the several points of view of the sketches illustrative of the West Coast' [1844 or 1845], the ink and watercolour original, shelved at B-031-036, held in Drawings and Prints. Urukahika Creek is marked. Includes numerous Maori placenames. Refers to boundaries of property belonging to Ellison. The name Hughes is recorded in connection with a boundary peg. Description: Aerial view of the Porirua area including Porirua Harbour, Titahi Bay and the western coast. Porirua Hospital can be seen in the foreground. Photographed by an unknown photographer in about 1950. Library client suggested that ca 1950 was a more correct date than the ca 1920s originally assessed for this photograph. The reasons that he gave for this deduction were - (1) The old hospital building built 1891-1900 is abscent. This had been damaged in the 1942 earthquakes, and was demolished in 1943. (2) A ramp bridge is under construction that was opened by the Queen in 1953. (3) There is no causway on either side of Porirua Harbour. These were built in the early 1950s.
