[Brees, Samuel Charles], 1810-1865 :[Porirua Harbour. ca 1842]

Date: 1842

By: Brees, Samuel Charles, 1810?-1865; Webb, Esther M, active 1938-1957

Reference: B-031-028

Description: Shows Maori gathering shellfish on the rocky shore. There is a single-sailed canoe in the water at the right, and several canoes are drawn up on the shore around the bay at the left. In a similar work (identical shoreline in the foreground) at C-126-025, and the engraving (Plate 3, illustration 8) in "Pictorial illustrations of New Zealand", it is thought that the view is from the Whitireia side, looking northeast towards the entrance to Paremata Harbour. In contrast, this view shows a continuous shoreline at the left, suggesting that it is a view from Mana or Plimmerton, looking south-east towards the narrow entrance to Paremata Harbour. Similar to: Porerua Bay (Porirua), plate 3/8 In: Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand, by S C Brees, London 1847 (but see notes above). Dated because of similarity to a dated work, at C-126-025. Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour 210 x 342 mm

Date: 1842 - 1845

From: Brees, Samuel Charles, 1810-1865 :Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand. London, John Williams and Co., Library of Arts, 141, Strand, 1847.

By: Brees, Samuel Charles, 1810?-1865; Melville, Henry, 1792-1870

Reference: PUBL-0020-05-3

Description: Shows Maori and Pakeha seated and standing close to barrels in the foreground, a dog, then people engaged in various activities close to buildings at the water's edge. Washing hanging on a clothes-line to the right, with the harbour and hills beyond. The accompanying text mentions the long-established nature of the whaling station of Joseph Toms (also known as Geordie Bolts) and the fact that Toms also ran an inn and a ferry service across the harbour from this point. The view shows the house and sheds of Toms and his family. Thoms whaling station was situated next to the Ngati Te Ra pa (fortified settlement) at Whitianga, or Paremata as it is now known. The whaling station was established by Joseph Thoms, whaler-trader, and later sold. James Cootes (whaler) also lived there. Cootes' eldest children Tame and Hemi (Tiapo) were born at this station or the pa next to it. The pa was occupied by Ngati Te Ra, a hapu of Ngati Toa. The two principal chiefs of this pa were Te Rakaherea and Te Kanawa. Te Rakaherea later relocated to Poroutawhao (Levin) with Te Rangihaeata were they both lived out their days. Other Titles - Porirua Quantity: 1 colour art print(s). Physical Description: Engraving, hand coloured 86 x 145 mm
