Description: Contains correspondence (Matiaha Tiramorehu) about various issues including Maori political participation in central government and admission to the Upper House, the Governments complaints of the high price of Maori land for Native schooling and other purposes and the excessive costs imposed on Maori for their childrens attendence. Also includes letters by Tamihana Te Rauparaha about an ongoing dispute between Ngati Raukawa and Muaupoko and Ngati Apa incursions into the Horowhenua burning houses (21/4/1870) and challenging Ngati Raukawa occupation in the district. Tamihana requests the government to confiscate the arms that were formerly issued to these tribes during the wars. Also mentions a curse by Te Peeti (?) threatening to exhume the bones of Te Whatanui and throw them into lake Horowhenua. Also contains a copy of the petition by Hohepa Tamaihengia requesting the return of Whitireia. Contains good examples of 19th century Kai Tahu dialect by Matiaha Tiramorehu ! Quantity: 1 folder(s). Description: Contains copies of speeches by King Tawhiao and others, on the occasion of the laying down of arms in 1881, together with a narrative account of this and related events. Also a listing of Kingitanga supporters in the Hauraki and Bay of Plenty, where hapu have signed over their land to the mana of King Tawhiao; the list is of the hapu affiliated to the Kingitanga, the names of members of the hapu and the rohe of the hapu. Contains copies of letters from King Tawhiao to various politicians warning them not to heed the land claims of various people with regard to the Poutama block near Mokau, because he controlled the land . The item also contains a `doomsday book' of Kingitanga supporters in the Hauraki and Bay of Plenty, where hapu have signed over their land to the mana of King Tawhiao; the book contains a list of hapu that affiliated to the Kingitanga, the names of members of the hapu and the rohe of the hapu. Description: Contains papers about the Kingitanga and the Tariao cult, explaining the origin, theology and activities of the cult, and the place of King Tawhiao in the belief system; also contains correspondence to and from the Kingitanga in the 1880s with regard to Maori political representation, Maori sovereignty, land issues, pardons for Te Kooti Arikirangi and others and the relationship between the Kingitanga and the Government. Also contains minutes from the proceedings of a court case before one of Tawhiao's courts, brought by Tiahuia Reone against Mamae Te Hapi regarding a stolen horse; translation (into Maori) of press reports in the New Zealand Herald and the Weekly News about the 'coming in ' of Tawhiao, and the negotiations that surrounded this; there is also a timeline showing when iwi affiliated to the Kingitanga. There is a copy of a letter from Tawhiao to the Privy Council, petitioning for an investigation into Maori land rights, Maori sovreignty and Maori political representation; the letter is accompanied by a lengthy preamble that sets out the basis for the grievances. There are copies of telegrams sent to and from Te Puea and Maui Pomare with regard to Maori conscription in World War I; there is also a typed copy of a report by Pei Te Hurinui Jones about the opening of Mahinaarangi Meeting House, and an annual report (with accounts) from an East Coast farming co-operative, signed by Apirana Ngata Quantity: 1 folder(s).
