He describes living and working in Melbourne and St Arnaud, Victoria, and his experiences of unionism, his return to NZ in 1889 and working on the `Wairarapa star', his work with the Liberal Party and Richard John Seddon, his move to other newspapers including ones in Hastings, Eketahuna, Oamaru, Woodville, and Christchurch. He describes many of the politicians and other people he met during his working life including John Ballance, Sir John McKenzie, the Plunger (an incarnation of the Jubilee Plunger who was in Australia), G P Donnelly, Shanley (a reporter), his father, Job Vile, Capt Logan, F M B Fisher, the Prince of Wales's visit, Nelle Scanlan, Frank Milner, Sir James Ferguson, Lorimer/McCluskey (a possible member of the Kelly gang), Baird, William Milne, Alexander McMinn, Jock Morris, George Forbes, Capt Russell, Sir Maurice O'Rorke, Sir Thomas Wilford, Tom Duncan, Thomas Lindsay Buick and others.
