Description: A view of the settlement of Picton from the shoreline a little distance away shows fishing nets drying on poles in the right foreground, and a man in a dinghy in the left foreground. At the waterfront at Picton a yacht, a sailing ship and a steamship are tied up, and two other yachts sail on the stretch of water in the middle distance. Amongst the buildings of the town is a large two-storeyed building which may be a hotel. Description: Shows two figures on the near ridge, looking down over the inlet of Picton Harbour at left. To the right are hills, and in the distance can be seen islands and hills in the Marlborough Sounds. There is a small area of cleared land with a Maori kainga or pa (Waitohi Pa?) in the port area to the left, and slightly to the right, a building that appears to be a European church. The New Zealand Company stamp, dated 1848, appears in the sky area along with the number 268. Painted for the New Zealand Company during Fox's travels around the northern South Island in 1848. Reproduced as a Turnbull Library Print, 1983. Exhibited in 'Picturing Paradise; the colonial watercolours of William Fox', Exhibition at National Library Gallery 25 February - 18 June 2000; Hocken Library, Dunedin, 11 September - 15 October 2000. Curated by Jill Trevelyan. Exhibited in 'Treasures in Trust' exhibition to celebrate 75th anniversary of the Alexander Turnbull Library in 1995. Description: Shows a corner of the harbour at Picton, with a cottage near the water's edge at the left. Its slab chimney is smoking. A path at far left leads away over the hill, presumably towards the settlement. In the middle distance is a group of buildings beside a wharf, beside which a small ship is anchored. Artist's notes at lower left: 'Roof of cottage blue zinc with rusty iron. Chimney yellow clay with blue black (iron) top' Other Titles - January 1872 Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - [Title] Similar to the image at C-085-006, which is a print from an original watercolour held at Auckland Art Gallery (Accession number 1937/15/88). Description: Shows a broad view of the harbour and foreshore at Picton from the eastern side, with yachts, launches, and many canoes, several in a race at the right of the picture. One of the launches is packed with spectators. There is a steamship tied up at the wharf at the right, and many spectators standing on the wharf. There are buildings on the waterfront, and houses further back to the left, one a distinctive two-storeyed house with verandahs and balconies and a turret. Quantity: 1 oil(s).
