Description: This letter to Couchman's family is written in the form of a diary and covers the period 28 August 1879 to 24 Dec 1879. Couchman describes the trip out to New Zealand, the family's initial job and living situation when they arrived in Wellington and then Bulls. The covering page includes some genealogical information. Source of title - Supplied Charlotte Couchman came to New Zealand on board the `Arethusa' along with some members of her family. They landed at Wellington but travelled on to Bulls. At the back of the diary are several pages of newspaper clippings. Also included is a transcript of the diary by Eliza Fielder in 1886? and Marsha Donaldson in 1989. Description: Burnett begins her journal in Auckland, New Zealand, but moves to London after a month. She records in great detail every thought and action for 5 1/2 months; she is very miserable in New Zealand, referring to her `ignoble life' and occupies herself with journeys to the station to collect the English mail, driving miles to visit remote neighbours, swimming and horse-riding, and other country pursuits. When she leaves Auckland on SS `Zealandia' she refers to `going home' implying that her sojourn in New Zealand was of a temporary nature, possibly connected with her father's business. From Sydney Bennett travels on board the SS `Orizabi' to England. Back in London she is involved in a constant round of visits, social functions, theatre, etc. It is a very full record and provides an interesting picture of the life of an intelligent young woman of the last century. Included are a few theatre and dance programmes, and dried plants; as well as a 16 page list of `People met' with many comments, some unflattering. Quantity: 1 volume(s). 0.02 Linear Metres. Description: Diary kept by Miss Edith Goodman on her voyage to New Zealand in Jun-Aug 1889 on the `Aorangi' from England and on the `Rimutaka' from Lyttelton in 1892, returning to England. She was accompanying Mr & Mrs Snowden and young family. For each voyage she has listed the passengers. The book has also been used as a scrapbook with manuscript and printed poems and and extracts. The volume was also used by Muriel Unsted in May 1978 when she flew out to New Zealand, leaving from Bangkok for Christchurch, travelling to Timaru, sightseeing around the region, and leaving for Adelaide from Christchurch. Arnold, Edward b 1823 : Letters to his family from New Zealand and Australia

Description: Accounts of voyages on the Will Watch and the Rajah, and a letter from Isabella McCallum from Darlinghurst, Sydney, to Edward Arnold in Geelong, dated 14 November 1843, giving news of old mutual friends and events since Arnold's departure from Sydney. The letters contain candid comments on places and people visited, and his attitude to the treatment of convicts and Maori. They also provide brief descriptions of employment prospects, cost and living conditions in Sydney and Auckland. Arnold accompanied Bishop Selwyn as a servant on the voyage to Australia, ariving in 1842; they then sailed to Waimate in New Zealand, where Arnold remained for about a year. Description: MacGregor records the family's activities, shipboard events and travel conditions; later entries describe family life in Dunedin and Oamaru and the diarist's impression of herself (15 Jul 1881-6 Jun 1886) Source of title - Supplied title Accompanying material - Accompanied by 3 pages copied from Scholfield, Dictionary of New Zealand Biography relating to MacGregor family MacGregor was born in Scotland in 1866. In 1881 her father, the Rev Dr James MacGregor, left his teaching post at the New Free College at Edinburgh and emigrated with his wife and nine children to New Zealand. One child died during the voyage. The family settled in Dunedin for five months and then Rev McGregor answered a call to St Columba's Church in Oamaru. The diary was written by Agnes as a young woman of 14 on board the `Jessie Redman' which departed Greenock on 15 July 1881 and arrived at Port Chalmers on 24 October 1881.
