Photographed by an unknown photographer for the Evening Post newspaper on 31 March 1932 From box containing EP-2461 to 2497 The construction of Hataitai Park was one of the work relief schemes in Wellington during the depression of the early 1930s. It was organised under the Unemployment Board's Scheme Five by which the Government provided the money and local bodies provided the jobs and the tools. Description: Aerial photograph of town belt covering Mount Victoria, Wellington. Shows Hataitai suburb looking west over the southern part of Mount Victoria. Eastern end of Mount Victoria road tunnel on bottom right of frame. Ruahine Street running alongside Hataitai Park in middle of frame. Also shows suburbs of Newtown and Mount Cook on western side of Mount Victoria. On crest of Mount Victoria is smoking chimneys of the Fever Hospital near Alexandra Park. On bottom left of frame is the Public Works camp buildings for defence construction workers set in trees. Photograph taken for the Evening Post newspaper of Wellington by an unidentified staff photographer. Source of descriptive information - Location identified by Library client Public Works Camp was also known as the Artisans Cmap, Workingmen's Camp or Industrial Workers Camp. In 1943 the military gave a portion of Hataitai Park to Public Works Department for a camp to house 250 defence construction workers. In May 1946 National Employment Service took over the camp. From April 1952 the camp housed waterside workers and other single working men, and later new immigrants. The camp closed in 1964 (Heritage Help website 15 Oct 2012). The Fever Hospital built by Wellington Hospital Board in 1920. In 1969 it was reopened as a temporary Chest Hospital, adding new wards in 1970 and closing in 1981.
