Description: Military map showing operations from the Auckland Fort Britomart Albert barracks, south along the military route to Cambridge, Aratitaha and Tokanui, Waikato District. Depicts military blockhouses, redoubts and forts (five in the Waikato region and over eleven in South Auckland), stockages, routes used on garrison duty only, engagements, Maori pa and kainga and the confiscation boundary as gazetted 17/12/1864 including the aukati (frontier) line. Also shows mission stations Waipa and Taupiri and geographical features, most with Maori placenames. Identifies battle sites at several places including Hairini (22.2.64), Rangiaohia (21.2.64) Kihikihi and Orakau (2.4.64), Waiari (11.2.64) and in South Auckland including Hills Clearing (8.9.63), Koheroa (17.7.63), Meremere (1.11.63). Several Maori pa and kainga are named, including Tokanui, Te Kopua, Otawhao, Otautahanga. In the Waikato regions a similar number of both redoubts and pa sites are identified. Description: Extensive view framed by tree ferns and flax in the foreground, looking down unto a small river winding through cultivated fields and scattered houses, with the kainga mentioned in the title presumably the cluster of buildings to the right. There is a ridge of low hills beyond the near river valley then the extensive plain of the Waihou River, formerly called the Thames, with mountains in the distance The original watercolour by Liardet is at C-137-005. The Thames River, named by Captain Cook, is now known by its original Maori name as the Waihou River. The "Kawaeranga" River is the Kauaerangi. Mt Pukekawa does not appear to be a name used in the area depicted any longer - the closest Pukekawa is some 50 kilometres to the west on the far side of the Waikato River. On the verso is a pencil and faint watercolour drawing of a pair of pink dancing shoes and a fan. Other Titles - Embouchure, Kauaerangi River, Waihou River Inscriptions: Recto - beneath image - Title, both artists' names and dates, in brown brushpoint in cursive calligraphic style.; Verso - "Mrs Anderson Coromandel sc" plus framing instructions dating from the 1960s. Description: Plan of the Maori positions around Pukekura, depicting Te Karanga Maori poistion next to the old pa site and the Mangawero River, settlements including Pukeumu, Tamakere, Wanake, Arihirua along the Waikato River, Raho settlement, Rarowera old pa, named mills including Ruatawhiwhi and Pekapekarau. Also shows the Awamutu Mission Station on 178 acres, Otawhao, the church at Otawhao, the old mission station at Mangapouri, Te Kopua (Reo? A. Reid), horse roads, old pa sites, mills, lakes and rivers. Shows Walkers old paddock and J. Morgan's old horse road. Kaipiha is named Turners. Catalogue card gives title as: 'Plan of native positions at Pukekura. Drawn by the Reverend John Morgan, 1864. ... Part of a report by Morgan to the Governor-General in the Kingite troubles of 1863-1864.' Description: Battle scene with groups of soldiers from the Forest Rangers and the 65th Regiment, plus General Cameron and staff, with guns firing and horses, several dead or wounded men, Maori whares in the background and bush and hills. Soldiers are identified by name and the death of General Nixon is shown. The man directing the Forest Rangers is likely to be von Tempsky. After an original by J.A.Wilson, a witness to the battle, and depicted in this view. A copy of the original and a description of the battle is published in Cowan, J. The New Zealand wars. Vol. 1 p. 345. Lieutenant McDonnell is likely to be Thomas McDonnell (1832-1899), noted for his heroism at Rangiaowhia. His brother, William McDonnell (1839-1919?) also fought in the New Zealand wars, but in the Wanganui area.
