Description: Gisborne and Petre went by sea to Coromandel and then by land, first up to Thames and travelling up the river, passing through pa, including Opita, then to Matamata, Tauranga, Rotorua, Lake Tarawera and Lake Rotomahana. They returned to Auckland by way of the Waikato River, passing through Maungatautari and Waipa. The journal includes interesting descriptions of Maori life and Gisborne meet the Revs Brown, Spencer, Chapman and Ashville [sic] and various prominent Maori. Description: A copy of a base map of Tongariro timber areas includes state forests and covers the area from the Whakapapa, Wanganui and Taringamutu Rivers to Lake Taupo, Tokaanu and the Waikato River, and the road from National Park to Taupo. A key indicates forestry areas as Crown, Native, Crown & Native, Cut-over, Committed and State Forest, all of which are colour coded. The majority of these forestry blocks are named on the map. Pencilled annotations refer to possible access of tracks through forestry blocks. The west shore of Lake Taupo has detailed information about Maori occupation naming pa and whare sites, geographical features, settlements, references to Waka, also some names of people. All names are in the Maori language with some English translations. The base map includes rivers and streams, main highways and private roads. The Pokaka Timber Company and Ketetahi Smg. Co. are named. Includes the names of Hopkins, Speirs & Winger, C.P. & P.D. Smith, Wier & Kenny, McKee Bros., K.R. Kapoor. A note states that this plan was compiled for reference inspection by S.A.C. Description: The first map is a plan of Turangawaewae Marae, Waikato, showing the pa site, including Turongo House, Mahingarangi House, Kimi-kimi Dining Hall, octagon office, flag poles, recreation grounds and lawns. Arrows from the river road to Hamilton East go through and lead out of the pa. The second map is partly a locality map, but also includes numbered sections, with acreages, west and southwest of Turangawaewae, while arrows show movement through the pa. Description: 'History of the Western Hauraki Plains', compiled by Elsie Alice McDonald (later Mrs Rae), focusses on the geology, landscape, and social history of the Western Hauraki Plains in the Waikato Region. McDonald's history has a preface and two parts: "Pt 1 The Maori" and "Pt 2 The Pakeha". In Part I subjects covered include pa sites and fortifications, burial sites and traditions, eeling, and conflict with other tribes, including Ngapuhi under Hongi Hika. Part II focusses on the development of the land for dairying and flax farming, the discovery of taonga during development, the building of houses, various personalities, and social events such as dances. Places specifically mentioned include: Kahurangi Pa, Torehape stream, Patetonga, and Mangawhero. Illustrations attributed to Kenneth William Rae (later McDonald's husband). Includes pasted in photographs. See Illustrations field for further information. Includes two commendations on the title page, one being from Duncan McFadyen Rae (principal of Auckland Training College and no relation) and the other from a person with the initials "F C L". Notes and remarks in pencil throughout the volume are in an unknown hand.
