Description: Diagrammatic map drawn on higher ground overlooking the scene where the HMS Buffalo navy ship was wrecked ('28th July 1840, at 10 am'). Map shows the site was wrecked, in a flat, sandy beach area, the thickly wooded hills behind it, the encampment of those who were in the wrecked ship, points on the beach where parts of the ship were washed ashore, and an area of flat marshy ground. Also depicted is the neighbouring pa site (maori village) of the Chief Teraroa, ('Teraroa's hippah'), the encampment of the part of the Buffalo's crew 'who were employed in the firest, preparing the cargo, Mercury River, part of Wiritianga's pa site, as well as Mr Brown's wharf-store and settlement ('Buffalo's store's were landed there'). Signature of creator on map but hard to distinguish. Appears to be ?T. Laslett. Shows several drawings of trees, buildings at Brown's settlement, navy tents. Description: Gisborne and Petre went by sea to Coromandel and then by land, first up to Thames and travelling up the river, passing through pa, including Opita, then to Matamata, Tauranga, Rotorua, Lake Tarawera and Lake Rotomahana. They returned to Auckland by way of the Waikato River, passing through Maungatautari and Waipa. The journal includes interesting descriptions of Maori life and Gisborne meet the Revs Brown, Spencer, Chapman and Ashville [sic] and various prominent Maori. Description: Probably a diazo copy of MapColl 832.14hkm/1864/Acc.37093 which is a hand drawn map of Orakau Pa, copied with some minor changes, from an original of the same title, which details the position of British troops in the battle and the line of retreat from the pa. Names of regiments and commanding officers are given at various locations approaching the pa, some having the date of 2nd April. An area labelled 'Headquarters 2 guns' is marked and the military term 'Picquet' locates two places on the map. Includes a plantation, reserve, Ti Tree and Raupo Swamps and contour lines. A reference key indicates parapets, banquettes, ditches and whares [sic]. Three plans, inset and with a different scale to the area map, are of the pa with its approach and two cross sectional views, labelled A-B and C-D. Description: Military map showing operations from the Auckland Fort Britomart Albert barracks, south along the military route to Cambridge, Aratitaha and Tokanui, Waikato District. Depicts military blockhouses, redoubts and forts (five in the Waikato region and over eleven in South Auckland), stockages, routes used on garrison duty only, engagements, Maori pa and kainga and the confiscation boundary as gazetted 17/12/1864 including the aukati (frontier) line. Also shows mission stations Waipa and Taupiri and geographical features, most with Maori placenames. Identifies battle sites at several places including Hairini (22.2.64), Rangiaohia (21.2.64) Kihikihi and Orakau (2.4.64), Waiari (11.2.64) and in South Auckland including Hills Clearing (8.9.63), Koheroa (17.7.63), Meremere (1.11.63). Several Maori pa and kainga are named, including Tokanui, Te Kopua, Otawhao, Otautahanga. In the Waikato regions a similar number of both redoubts and pa sites are identified. Description: This map covers the area from Maungatautari Mountain and the upper reaches of River Waikato to the mouth of the River Waihou entering the Firth of Thames, and including Tauranga Harbour. Settlements, pa, mountain ranges, rivers, streams and lakes are marked, as are numerous sites of fights accompanied by a record of numbers killed. The Te Aroha block is prominently shaded as are adjacent areas which appear to be jointly claimed by Ngatihaua and Ngaiterangi. Boundaries of other Maori land are marked by dotted lines, some of which are named as follows:- Ngatiraukawa lands, Ngatihaua lands, Ngaiterangi lands, Hauraki lands, Waikato lands. Limits of the scale of this map have been marked with red pencil to allow for changes in size during photocopying. The orientation of this map faces south. A similar copy of this map is located at the same classification and a cataloguing record can be found under the same title. Inscriptions: Recto - Produced before the Court, Auckland 21 January 1871.
