Description: Drawn on a base map of Owahanga Station, the annotations depict pā sites, (including terraced pā), middens (deposits of shells or animal bones indicating human settlement) and pits along the Mataikona River. Several comments are written on the map such as the bulldozing of sites, pit size, locality of farm buildings. Drawn by P.J.P. Base map: 'Owahanga Station' (ms map?, 1964). Surveyed by R G Lockie. This map names paddocks, buildings, and describes land use. Gives topographical information. Includes enlargement of the layout of the station's farm buildings such as wool shed, cook house, and shearing quarters. Map consists of two sheets glued together. Description: Topographic map of the southern half of the North Island, with especial emphasis on the Wairarapa valley, showing natural features and stands of timber; the Maori names for some of these features are given, together with names and locations of some pa . Includes the surveyors' route which began on 1st. June, ca. 1848, from a site along the Manawatu River to the Ruamahanga River, Lake Wairarapa, ending at the Hutt River on 20 June. A road cuts through a gorge at the far left, and there are talls grasses in the left foreground. Description: Map of the Wanganui River, on six sides of 4 sheets, five of which are numbered, of a canoe and camping cruise from Whakahoro to Atene. The sixth and final map of the route has the subheading 'Locality of base camp and training ground'. Each map includes some navigational instructions and rapids are numbered and named in a key as are distances of one mile and five miles adjusted between major landmarks. Historical sites, numerous pa sites, huts, settlements, caves, peaks, springs, mineral and freshwater sources, landings, many mission stations and stations are named. Several inset sketches cover the difficult stretches of the river, mainly rapids, and show the routes the canoes should take. Each map includes mileages at the beginning and end of each featured section while arrows indicate North and Downstream. Extensive notes give sources of historical detail and include general information. Quantity: 6 map(s) both sides of 2 sheets and one side of another two sheets. Description: Copy of a topographic map of the Wellington region from Port Nicholson and Paliser Bay following the Ruamahanga River to the Manawatu River to the coast at Foxton. The Rimutaka and Tararua Ranges are named as are rivers, bays, heads, some settlements, tracks and roads. Some sections are marked and pa sites. Wakefield, Tiffin and Kettle have made descriptive notes about the terrain, views and navigable rivers on the map as well as at the bottom of it. Note on catalogue card states: Photocopy of col. MS map by W H Burnand inserted in his copy of New Zealand journal v. 4. p.218. 1843-44. Description: Bevan describes incidents in his life in the Otaki and Manawatu districts from 1840 to the 1860s. He was the son of a rope maker and followed his father's trade and farmed. He refers in particular to relationships between Maori and settlers and includes descriptions of Maori pa, legends, customs and the scenery, and a walk he made as a child in 1845 from Wellington to Waikawa, Otaki.
