Description: Album of photographs taken by James Valentine & Sons, circa 1880s-1900s. Most of the images have a caption printed into the photograph, and many also have a hand-written caption beneath. At some point many of the photographs have been removed from their slots, and others have been placed in the wrong slot so that the subject and caption on the photograph does not match with the caption below. Places are listed above. There are five photographs of Maori, three of women, two of chiefs. The names given are difficult to identify, having complicated spelling, and the captions on photographs have faded in some cases. They include "Maori wahine Ngareti"; "Maori chief Hoera Watene"; "Maori chiefs Panapa Tenihotiti and Topopoki" and "Maori wahine Huihana?". Description: Information sheet printed on both sides. One side relates to Maori canoes - tree-felling, hollowing out. Shows a mokihi or raft, a river canoe, war canoe and fishing canoe as well as a canoe bailer. Shows a reproduction of a picture of canoes at Gisborne in 1836, by Joel Samuel Polack. The other side shows scenes of Maori warfare and weaponry, reproductions of pictures of war canoes, a haka, patu and other weapons (includes George French Angas' "Weapons and implements of war ; warriors preparing for a fight" 1847; his "War dance before the Pah of Oinemutu, near Rotorua Lake"; and J I McDonald's [Alarm in a Maori pa] 1906); a photograph of a model of a pa in the Dominion Museum, and a picture of the earthworks at Gate Pa. Description: A group of six red-coated soldiers (with part of a seventh on the far right) and one "friendly" Maori in the foreground, behind a low shelter, loading and shooting towards the extensive palisades of Hone Heke's pa at Ohaiawai. The palisades are shown with rifle holes continously along the base to enable firing from behind protection; the English soldiers and their companion, on the other hand, are having to raise their heads above their shelter to fire, with the exception of those on the far right, who are behind a Maori-style palisade. Description: Shows view from British camp of assault on Heke's pa. A collection of circular tents (and one rectangular tent at right), stands around a campfire in the foreground, with top of a larger tent visible in right foreground. A group of soldiers crouch behind camp fence in middle distance at left. Eight grass huts are close to the tent group at right, in front of hill topped by picket (group of British troops) which surveys the attack taking place in left background. British troops attack the palisades of the pa in two places. A flag-pole in the pa carries two flags, one a Union Jack. For description see: Barthorp, Michael. Description: Shows several whare in centre foreground, a bridge at right, and the impressive Pohaturoa Rock in centre background. Possibly the original for the wood engraving 'Pohaturoa' by C. D. Barraud published in his New Zealand Graphic and Descriptive (London, 1877) p. 19. The accompanying text reads "Pohatura, or the Great Rock ... which rises 650 feet abruptly from the plain on the banks of the Waikato near Niho-o-te Kiore, is a celebrated pa of the Ngatiraukawa tribe".
