Description: Album of landscapes taken by various photographers including Wheeler & Sons and the Burton Brothers, circa 1870s and 1880s. All the views are of New Zealand except the last sequence (p 33-37) showing Rio de Janeiro. Of particular interest are views of a wool wagon drawn by oxen, crossing a ford; a series showing an unidentified curved viaduct under construction (p 28-32); and a number showing a farm run by J F L Jetter at Te Puke when the land was partially cleared, with cattle grazing in paddocks, and Mr Jetter standing by a horse in a paddock in front of his home. Description: Publicity photographs taken for New Zealand Railways circa 1930 to 1931 by unidentified photographers. Some subjects have images dotted throughout the album, including the arrival in New Zealand of Lord and Lady Bledisloe in March 1930; the arrival in 1931 of Sir Francis Chichester after his crossing of the Tasman in his bi-plane; various activities at the Hillside Railway Workshops, including a group portrait of staff; and various images relating to Railways ticket offices, advertisements for railway tours and excursions, photographs of tickets, and an advertisement for house removals by train. A series of views show athletic sports including running races, hurdles, cycle racing, and long-jump. There are scenes showing the international sportsman Dr Otto Peltzer winning the 880 yards, handicap race at Wellington, on 8th February 1930. Team sports are shown in two views of a women's hockey team playing on the field below Victoria University College, and a series on rugby football, including views of the 5th test between Britain and New Zealand at Athletic Park in 1930. Railways head office picnic, including races by men, women and children (p 35-36), and a huge crowd at Paekakariki Beach, picnicking and swimming (p 70). Official occasions include scenes of the Empire and Australian Farmers' Tour, a view of the cortege at Sir Joseph Ward's funeral outside Parliament Buildings, the opening of Massey Memorial, and various views of unidentified railway officials in personal and group portraits, including one of the members of the New Zealand Railway Commission. Description: Opens with Queenstown and Dunedin, and closes with the SS Rotorua in George Sound and Mitre Peak, Milford Sound. But most of the rest of the album relates to the Auckland region. There is a strong emphasis on Piha its coastal features like Lion Rock, and on groups of mainly men who went there on camping, hunting and fishing weekends or holidays. There is also one image of a group of surveyors and their camp at Piha dated 1894. Many images record social outings and picnics, especially at Northcote. These include both men and women dressed up for the occasion. There is a goup image of the St James Football Club dressed for the game dated 1895. Two photographs show a horse and buggy driven by a youthful Uncle Harold accompanied by Grandpa Jenkin and baby Irene. Another shows Mr Ogles's horse and cart, and another Jim Bailey's (of Cabbage Bay) ox team. There is also an image of a team of horses and a sled taking the milk to the factory at Onewhereo. There are images of waterfalls at Karekare and Nihotapu (Waiatura), and of the Nihotapu Creek. Some views of Auckland City and one of Waitemata Harbour probably on a weekend with yachts out on the water. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s).

Description: Shows a view of a corner of Lake Wanaka, with a small paddle steamer approaching from the left towards a jetty at the right. The steamer flies a flag from both its mast and stern, and around one dozen gentlemen and lady passengers stand aboard. The smoke from the single funnel floats back to the left and the boat's wake extends past the picture's left edge. The jetty at right is piled with bales and a quantity of timber, and a man and a woman with a parasol are standing on the jetty. In the background are the mountain ranges around Wanaka. Four gulls fly in the right foreground. Other Titles - Lake Wanaka Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - [Signed and dated]; Backing board recto - centre - [Title] Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour, 338 x 498 mm. Provenance: Previously purchased from a Christchurch estate. The note on the backing board adds that the SS Theodore was built for Theo Russell and Captain Hedditch, and that Tom Creig was the engineer. "He [Tom Creig?] gave this painting to Sam McSkimming as a parting gift when S. McSkimming & family left Pembroke to go to Arrowtown, then a busy goldmining town in 1900" Processing information: Deframed by the Library.

The two-storied long brick building behind the houses is the back of a row of shops facing Hillside Road. Sawn timber is stacked in the right foreground, and a truck laden with sacks of coal is parked on the left. On the side of the truck is the legend "R H Ledlie. Coal merchant". Photographed by Albert Percy Godber circa 1926. Source of descriptive information - library client suggested view was of railway siding for unloading coal and timber rather than a coal storage depot, and provided information suggesting date was likely to be 1926. R H Ledlie does not appear in Wise's Post Office Directory as late as 1926, but does appear in Stone's Otago & Southland Directory for 1926. Quantity: 1 b&w original negative(s).
