Description: View from above Grafton Gully, covered in dense bush, with fenced hills and Governor Hobson's grave in the cemetery to the left. Government House is left of centre in the middle distance and three other houses overlooking Grafton Gully are somewhat closer on the right, one of them the home of William Connell, the first Postmaster-General and his wife Isabella. In the distance across the water, the flagstaff marks Mount Victoria, with Rangitoto beyond that. The flat island further off, left of centre is Tiritiri. Painted in early 1843, before the artist moved to an appointment at Russell. A fence has been raised around Governor Hobson's grave. The funeral had taken place in November 1842. Description: Shows a view looking across bracken, to the back of the first Government House (built 1842, burnt 1848), with the Waitemata and North Head in the background. There is a sailing ship in the right distance, and a waka with two triangular sails on the harbour. Two Maori sit in the bracken, and their is a goat grazing in the left foreground. In the right centre background is a raised storehouse (?), and there is a clump of flax in the right foreground. The hill above Devonport has a flagstaff. Inscriptions: Mat recto - beneath image - [Title] Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Sepia wash, on paper, 85 x 153 mm. Provenance: Part of Mrs Hobson's album. The album was passed by Eliza Hobson to her daughter, Eliza, Lady Rendel.

Compare Mitford's very similar view at E-216-f-041. The view is attributed to Edward Ashworth by Janet Paul in Mrs Hobson's album (Auckland, 1990) p. 149. Description: Auckland City from Mechanics Bay (now Stanley Street). The houses on the cliff in the middle distance mark the southern end of Official Bay. A flag flies on Point Britomart and on the higher ground to the left are St Paul's, the Barracks and the business enterprises at the top of Shortland Crescent. Government House lies in the sheltered hollow on the left. The complete spire on St Paul's suggests the painting was done after March 1844, the date of completion of the spire. Description: Photographs of the North Island of New Zealand taken by Daniel Mundy during the 1860s to 1871. Captions hand-written by Mundy on verso of each page. (Information from handwriting and signature `D.L.M.' in this album at p. 51) The Thames goldfields are shown in a number of images, including some with captions Shortland and Grahamstown (now part of Thames); the Moanataira [i.e. Moanatairi] wire tramway, with the Rainbow Hotel nearby; Hunt's claim (known as the Shotover Mine); the Missouri Battery; the Bank of New Zealand building at Grahamstown; and miners' huts. The timber industry is shown with kauri logs being transported by bullock teams and awaiting transport by water. Photographs associated with Maori include military outposts at Terewera (i.e. Tarawera) and Ormond; "Kawiti's Runanga, or court houses, now `tapu', Waiomeo, Bay of Islands" (p. 21); "limestone caves at Waiomeo [sic], Bay of Islands; the burial place of the Mangakahia tribe. Strictly tapu" (p. 22); "Group at Waimeo feast, Bay of Islands" (p. 20); "Native feast - or bone-scraping at the burial of the remains of several chiefs at Waiomeo, Bay of Islands" (p. 46); "Waipawa Valley, Poverty Bay, scene of the massacre by Te Kooti" (p. 47); "Here the moa feet impressions were found, Poverty Bay, Sept. 1871, D.L.M." (p. 51). There are two-image panoramas of the Thames goldfields and Napier. In this album they are not on following pages, but are separated. Description: Auckland City from the hills behind the city, with a flax bush to the right and three Maori viewing the scene from the fern on the left. A stream in the middle ground (now the site of Queen Street) leads down to the town with Government House shown in the fenced area in the centre right and St Paul's Church silhouetted against Mt Victoria across the harbour. The cluster of buildings closest to the viewer at the lowest point in the valley is the Queen Street gaol, excavated in 1987 (see TL13/14/1 8/3/91). Rangitoto is shown in the background and there are several ships in the harbour. The scene is shown at sunset. Exhibited at 'The world was all before me; journals and watercolours of Edward Ashworth from the collections of Alexander Turnbull Library', Curator was Jill Trevelyan. The exhibition title is taken from Ashworth's journal where he misquotes from John Milton's poem "Paradise Lost": "The world was all before me / where to choose my place of rest". At the National Library Gallery, 27 April - 29 July 2001. A preliminary pencil drawing for this watercolour is held at A-208-018. The title of the watercolour is taken from the title of the pencil drawing, which shows St Paul's without its tower, although a tentative tower is lightly sketched in. The drawing would be likely to have been executed during 1843 and no later than January 1844, when Ashworth departed New Zealand for Hong Kong. The watercolour may have been completed while Ashworth was in New Zealand, with the putative tower added; or he may have worked from his pencil sketch at a slightly later date. Several of the sketches in the Hobson album were completed after Mrs Hobson left New Zealand in 1843. Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). This page was too large for the album and was becoming damaged around the edges. It was formerly located on p. 107 of the album.
