Description: Aerial photograph, produced by NZ Aerial Mapping Ltd., Ref. No. A/S 2218, Flown 27.3.69, of L.W. Tonkin's farm in the Matakohe area, NE of Kaipara Harbour, used as a base map to which the farm and paddock boundaries have been outlined in red and detailed in a key. Hand-written notes in the margin give details of neighbouring houses with name references. Features include a trig point with height in feet, cabbage trees (location of), height in feet (of a hill), silo, to Matakohe, Ruatuna. A.P.B.W. believed to be the cartographer. Hand-written notes included in the margins are as follows: "Mainly hill country (sold 1947 to Crown for rehab) leading to 'The Swamp' on Ruawai Flats." "Matakohe Beet Farms, Ltd. Includes views of the construction on a timber dam (probably in Coromandel), Coromandel Public Hospital, Kennedy Bay (Coromandel), a stream crossing between Opitonui and Coromandel, bush camps in the Coromadel district and a traffic bridge in Rodney County. Daniel P Parker is recorded in the Wise's Post Office directories as an engineer in Coromandel from 1902 to 1930. Between 1906 and 1911 he is also recorded as a photographer. Description: Depicts the ceremony of choosing the first National flag of New Zealand by the Maori chiefs from one of three designs, witnessed by a grathering of missionaries, settlers, commanders of 10 British and 3 American ships. The ceremony took place at the house of the British Resident, Mr James Busby at Waitangi in the Bay of Islands on the 20th March 1834 with a salute of 21 guns from HMS Alligator (in distance). The flag that was chosen is being pointed at by a chief holding up a greenstone mere. The design chosen was the red cross of St George on a white background and a small red St George's cross in the top left hand corner on a blue background. In each of these quarters is an 8 pointed star. An enlargement of the flag is in the bottom lefthand corner of the postcard. The flag was called the Flag of United Tribes of New Zealand (1834-1840) The flag was adopted by Shaw Savill & Company as its house flag in 1858 it having ceased to be the national flag when New Zealand came under the British sovereignty Quantity: 1 colour photo-mechanical print(s). Description: The reminiscences mainly concentrate on the period 1842 to 1878 and were dictated to members of his family during the latter part of 1908 and beginning of 1909. They give details of White's mothers family and his father's career as a midshipman. They then go on to describe White's career in New Zealand first as a surveyor in the Horokiwi and Wellington areas, a farmer at Mohunoa (Kapiti) and Wainuiomata, in the volunteer forces which fought against Te Rangiatea, his visits to Auckland and then his later career in Mongonui [Mangonui] holding various government posts including work for the Land Commissioner. The reminiscences give White's impressions of relations between Maori and settler especially in the greater Wellington/Kapiti and Maunganui districts and recount many incidents involving such people as Te Rauparaha, Governor Grey, Fitzroy, McLean, Hadfield and many others. McWhannell album 5

Description: Collection of photographs created and probably taken by Rhoda McWhannell, from the time of her marriage to Frederick McWhannell. The first scene shows them on their honeymoon, at One Tree Hill in Auckland, on 13th November 1922. From there they go to Whangarei, with views of the Whangarei Hospital, men playing tennis, a group of three men and a woman entitled `The foundations of "Fairview" Onerahi', and Whangarei Falls. Following Whangarei are a number of views of Russell, including the jetty and `The Gables', and the yacht `Kitty fraser'. Later in November they reach the Coromandel Peninsula, and photographs include Cyril Cory-Wright in the launch `Eilepa', and a photograph of Mrs Cory-Wright with her children Patsy and Derek; and the Reverend Norrie (minister of the Coromandel Peninsula). The next group of photographs show Mrs Shires, and scenes of sheep mustering at `Oruru', Kaitieke in the King Country. At the front of the album is an envelope with mostly unidentified people, taken much later, most of them being coloured. Also inserted in the album is a newspaper cutting from the Herald (Section 2, Wednesday 13 June 1984), on a young couple (Tony and Sue Clark) who had managed to create a successful farm from very rough hill country on the Kawhautahi Road, near Kaitieke.
