Description: Album of publicity photographs, and photographs of posters and advertisements taken by unidentified photographers for New Zealand Railways. Many of the images in this album were taken for a series of articles written by Oliver Neal Gillespie between January 1939 and June 1940, published in the New Zealand Railways Magazine. The series was entitled "Buy New Zealand goods and build New Zealand. New Zealand Industries Series". These contribute the largest group of images in the album, covering a wide range of industries. They include men's and women's clothing manufacturers; electrical engineering companies such as Pallo Engineering (petrol pumps), National Engineering (Neeco electric ovens), Standard Engineering Company; tobacco factories; potteries; Nugget shoe polish factory; brushware factories; and companies associated with the manufacture of food products (eg Watties canneries, Edmonds Baking Powder, Griffins and Bycrofts biscuit makers, and Whittome & Stevenson sauce and pickle makers. There are other sequences of images, including newly built state housing in Lower Hutt, with some houses still under construction beside the Hutt River, a streetscape, and a children's playground (p 7-8); a large crowd joining in a send-off of R.S.A. men to Australia in April 1938; a train laden with boxes of oranges from Rarotonga, the "Special orange train from Auckland"; and photographs of charts showing the progress of the New Zealand Government Railways, with railways workshops staff organisation charts (for Otahuhu, Addington, Hutt & Hillside Workshops (p 28-29). On p 35 there are views of a new hangar at Rongotai Aerodrome, under construction, then views of the completed exterior and the interior with a row of Blackburn B-5 Baffin bi-planes. Several images show collection of Railway sports trophies (including cups for their cricket teams), and two views of New Zealand Railways staff member Neil Edwards, a tennis champion who represented New Zealand in Britain in 1939. He is holding a newspaper with the headline 'Tania Harris leads massive march against disruption'. Muldoon is sitting at his desk reading a book entitled 'Picketing & the law'. Refers to the 'Kiwis Care' march organised by a young woman, Tania Harris, in Queen St, Auckland on 3 March 1981 in which thousands of people rallied to show their disatisfaction with continuing industrial disruption and strikes. Description: Photographs of construction projects undertaken by Hansford & Mills Construction Company. The most important section consists of views of Parliament Buildings in Wellington, with a large number of images, both exterior and interior. Much of the detail relates to the marble columns and veneer, the marble sourced from the Kairuru Quarry in the Takaka Hills. Interior views show details of various areas, including the Legislative Council Chamber, the House of Representatives, the Maori Committee Room, the lobby for the members' lounge, and marble decoration in the main vestibule, the first floor, and the staircase. There are a number of images of the Kairuru Quarry, showing methods of quarrying the marble, transportation of the marble to Wellington, and machinery used for cutting and shaping the stone once it had arrived in Wellington. One scene also shows the incline at the old quarry at Sandy Bay. Other buildings, all only exterior views, or views of steel construction in early stages, include the State Fire Insurance Building (Featherston Street), Magnus Motors (Wakefield Street), the steelyard in Cable Street, the Ford Building (for Colonial Motor Company), and the Wellington Gas Company buildings, all in Wellington. Also two views of the Christchurch branch of the Wellington Woollen Company. Description: The family discusses Wyatt Creech's win by chalenge of the Wairarapa seat and argue about whether the government has a majority of one or two seats. Refers to the 1987 election, in which Reg Boorman won by one vote, but Creech later challenged that result on the grounds that Boorman had violated new laws about election spending. Creech also challenged more than 200 votes (on various grounds). The Electoral Court approved Creech's petition, and Creech won the seat in 1988 with a majority of 34 votes (9994 to 9960). Description: Two photographs of a Maori picnic at Pigeon Bush on the occasion of the settlement of the ownership of Lake Wairarapa. The first shows a large crowd of men, women and children with Seddon on the right in front of a two-storey wooden house. The second is of the crowd under the trees, one with a concertina, and three men holding up eels they had caught. A photograph of Members of Parliament in the debating chamber. The names given are: Symes, O'Maara, A L D Fraser, J Palmer, Hall, Field, Witheford, Wi Pere, Bennet, Kaihu, Duncan, MIlls, Ward, Cairncross, Stevens, Hogg, F M Smith, Carroll, McGowan and Hall-Jones. A photograph of the opening by Seddon of the Ballance Bridge described as "over Mangahau". It was taken by P De Loree & Son a photographer based in Pahiatua which may indicate the approximate location. The crowd in the foreground is mostly of children and the bridge has been decorated with plants. A photograph of Seddon, Mrs Hogg and Alexander Wilson Hogg opening a bridge. It is captioned at the bottom left "Mangainoka 4.3.1896" but this location has not been identified and the name on the reverse is illegible. Two photographs by Winzenberg of Seddon and others at a Liberal rally near Greytown and at a picnic possibly on the same occasion.
