Includes sketch maps detailing his travels in Australia and an undated photograph of farm labourers. Description: Album of scenic views of Tasmania, Sydney and wider New South Wales, and of New Zealand, both North and South Islands. Views of lighthouses include Derwent Lighthouse (Tasmania), Macquarie Lighthouse (South Head, Sydney), and Farewell Spit Lighthouse (Tasman Region, New Zealand). The New Zealand photographs are nearly all taken by Josiah Martin, and include one that is a collage of scenes he photographed, and one of Maori weapons, with captions to say they were deposited [in Auckland Museum] by Captain Gilbert Mair. Description: Memoirs written by Spence about 1939 beginning with a description of his family and life on the Orkney Isles, going to school followed by his working life there; he writes of his decision to go to New Zealand and his arrival in 1888 on SS Ionic. He describes his decision to become a Presbyterian minister and the various stages this entailed before he was ordained in 1902. Following appointments in New Zealand he went to Australia where he remained. The Spence family did revisit New Zealand frequently and describe their holidays in many parts of the country including Rotorua, Auckland, Napier, Dunedin, Christchurch, Woodville and Wellington. The memoirs are accompanied by an abstract compiled by Spence's grand-niece, Heather Jones. Description: Album of photographs of New Zealand (pages 1-10), Australia, Egypt, Europe and Canada taken by unidentified photographers circa 1880s. The New Zealand scenes are mostly in the South Island, including the Bealey, Cheviot Hills Station, the flying fox across the Teremakau [i.e. Taramakau] River, the Canterbury Plains, Governor's Bay and Timaru. One view shows two men in a logging camp; two views of the North Island show Muemutu [i.e. Ohinemutu], and Russell's Gold Battery at Taruru Creek. Australian scenes include a group of New Caledonian Kanaka with their "humpies" (thatched dwellings) at Bundaberg in Queensland; and one of the Wombat Ranges "the haunt of the Kelly gang". Several photographs of Egypt include views of Port Said, the Suez Canal, camels, Egyptians, and early ruins. Canadian images include Port Levis taken from across the St Lawrence River, and views of the Niagara and Montmorency Falls both in summer and in winter. Description: Mounted images with annotations from the first part of Albert Armitage Salmon's 1936-1937 trip to New Zealand. Images of South Island scenery and tramping, particularly along the Milford Track, comprise the bulk of the photographs, but prints also include some images of Salmon's departure from Sydney. Photographs taken by Salmon. - The images follow the route of Salmon and his companions' travels, and begin in Sydney Habour (Port Jackson) with images of the Habour Bridge, Luna Park illuminated at night, and the ship, 'Strathnaver', in the water. Also contains a photograph of Salmon's travel companions, Mary Hansen, Eric Keehn, Irene Booth, and Reg Booth aboard the deck of the 'S.S. Awatea' on their journey across the Tasman Sea. - The New Zealand images of the North Island begin in Auckland, and show a view of the Harbour and the University grounds with tulips in bloom. The images also include a view from inside a road tunnel in the King Country, rock formations above the Awakino River, the coastline and rock formations at New Plymouth, views of Mount Egmont (Taranaki), and tramping scenes in the fairy forest of Mount Egmont. The photographs also include views of Wanganui and the Wanganui River, the Wellington Harbour towards Miramar peninsula from the summit of Mount Victoria, and the hoisting of their car 'Marie', a Ford V8, onto the deck of the 'Rangitira' for the ferry ride from Wellington to Port Lyttelton, Christchurch. - The South Island photographs begin in Christchurch and include images of the War Memorial Bridge over the Avon River, and Hagley Park. The bulk of the images show scenery in Fiordland, including views of Lake Te Anau, the Eglinton Valley, the Hollyford River, Milford Sound, the swinging bridge and other scenes along the Milford Track, including images of snow, ice, waterfalls, glaciers, rivers, plant life, and mountain peaks. The box also contains a photograph of Mary Hansen wearing ankle boots with small heels as she crosses the Roaring Meg stream from Jervois Glacier. Mackay album

Description: Album created with aviation pioneer Horatio Murdoch MacKay. Photographs include several in which MacKay was the first man to fly across the Tasman as a passenger, making the flight with Charles Kingsford Smith. One sequence shows Boeing biplane (purchased by New Zealand Airways Ltd in 1934), shipped from Vancouver and assembed in New Zealand, and the first landing at Green Island `Aerodrome'. A number of views of different aeroplanes, both monoplanes and biplanes follows. There are a large number of postcards of Launceston, Jenolan Caves, and Ballarat in Australia, and caves in the Waitomo area of New Zealand. Photographs of a group travelling on a South Island tour by White Star Taxis, a company which MacKay established, including views of the first hotel at Wanaka `The White Star Private Hotel'. One scene shows one of the taxis after an accident. Other scenes show a group skiing, a group at the summit of the Crown Range, and a large group on a motor launch. The last sequence is chiefly family photographs, including several houses, and two different wedding parties; several portraits, possibly of Horatio MacKay's wife Helen Emma (nee Griffiths).
