Description: A panoramic view of New Plymouth viewed from the sea, with Gannet and Albatross Islands on the right, the Wai Tera (Waitara) 'originally fixed on for the New Plymouth Settlement", the 'present site of New Plymouth' (before any houses were built) - all on the left side of the panorama. On the right are Mount Egmont, 'Barrett's [Accommodation] Houses and Hotel', 'Native Pah' and the Sugar Loaf Islands 'The islands on which Barrett defeated 5000 natives' In 'Information relating to New Plymouth (London, Smith Elder, 1841). p. 9-10, under 'Climate and soil' 'Mr G. Duppa states:- 'Amongst other sketches, I have sent you a panoramic view of the Sugar Loaves, Mount Egmont, and the Taranaki district generally, which I made when I went down there in the Brougham, with the Plymouth Company's surveyors. It will give you a better idea of the country than any verbal description I could give, beyond a few observations. The land for about three miles inland is slightly undulating, but not so steep but that a plough would go over the whole of it ... It is for the most part covered with fern and brushwood (which fire levels with the ground) for several miles inland, when you first meet with groves of timber, present a most park-like aspect ...' Description: Photogprahs of New Zealand circa 1890s to 1900s, probably taken by George William Barltrop. The first sequence includes scenes around Auckland harbour, including Rangitoto Onehunga, with one view of passengers on board the ferry `SS Takapuna'. One photograph shows a group of young Maori standing on the bank of the Whanganui River (four young men under an umbrella). Wellington area views of Pahautanui (Pauatahanui), Horokiwi, Lyall Bay and the Wellington Heads. On page 873 (the album pages run from 856 to 895), there is a postcard with heads of George William Barltrop and his wife Emma Jane Barltrop, with a collage of images relating to the Missions to Seamen. Slipped beneath the postcard is the death notice for Emma Jane Barltrop (died 24 September 1954). There are views of the Rimutakas from the railway line; a flock of sheep being herded along a road in palmerston North; three people standing outside a wooden bungalow in Palmerston North; and there is a view of another house in Feilding. The river mouth at Oroua; the grounds of the Wanganui Race Course (with white swans on the lake; a woman feeding a peacock, and a woman under an umbrella, walking on rail tracks beside the sea at Castlecliff; followed by three views from a boat on the Whanganui River, one a view of Upokongaro, with the church spire just visible, and two of groups of Maori waiting on the riverbank. Description: Photographs taken in New Zealand, except several of yachts in the Solent, England which were taken by West & Son (Gosport, England). Most of the New Zealand scenes were photographed by Arthur Thomas Bothamley. A number of images show Pukearuhe and the Pukearuhe Redoubt, and include two views of a large wooden and thatched roofed house near the Redoubt. It was single-storeyed, with a bay window, and was probably the house occupied by Marion Ellis Rowan and her husband (1873-1877) while the 43rd Regiment was stationed at Pukearuhe, near the Redoubt. Several views of the Marlborough Sounds show a group, including Gerald Fitzgerald (son of James Edward Fitzgerald), alongside several Rob Roy canoes, and one with a canoe named `Geroit Mare'. Description: Album compiled circa 1863-5, by Spencer P T Nicholl of the 43rd Oxfordshire Light Infantry. Some photographs taken by John Kinder. Photographs include images relating to military life, including the Oakura Redoubt, the Kaitake Redoubt, officers of the 68th regiment, military camps in Taranaki, and the Militia Hospital in New Plymouth. Pages 15-18 have the pencilled caption `Lake Taupo', but in fact are photographs of the volcanic area around Lake Rotomahana, and were taken by John Kinder in 1865. They include a sulphur volcano (whakataratara), the Whatapoho geyser, Otukapuarangi (Pink Terraces), and the Tarata or principal boiling springs.
