Description: Shows a view looking into an inlet, with Arrow Rock on the right. There is a large house high on the cliff at the left, a jetty in the left foreground, a small rowboat in the centre foreground, and a red buoy at the right. The description on the backing board of the clifftop house as Mr Hoggard's is incorrect, as is the attribution to Heaphy. Both depended upon Wellington being the location of the scene depicted. Historian Ian Wards suggests that the house may be that of Major Mathew Richmond, who had a house in the area depicted. He was resident in Nelson from 1847 to his death in 1887 (Pers. comm. June 2001) Other Titles - Mr Hoggard's house on "The Cliff", by Major Heaphy Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - W H L 1867; Backing board recto - centre - Mr Hoggard's house on "The Cliff" 1867, by Major Heaphy Quantity: 1 watercolour(s).
