Description: Photograph album compiled by David S Laing. Comprises views of Hawke's Bay, particularly Lake Waikaremoana. The first part of the album contains published plan and photographs of the Suez Canal. It includes scenes of shipping at Port Said and on the canal, the pyramids, the Great Sphinx, an oasis, with life at the various localities. There is one photograph of Edinburgh, looking across at the old town from Princes Street, with a line of horses and carriages in the foreground. The latter part of the album contains scenes in New Zealand, many showing Lake Waikaremoana with various locations, including Te Kauanga-o-Manaia (Straits of Manaia), and Te Ana-o-Tikitiki cave. The other main area shown is Napier, the city, the wharves, and two churches. A large group of photographs are groups of people; family groups; groups with tennis rackets; groups with bowls; and a few scenes show a man in military uniform. Description: Five photographs of anchors from the St Jean Baptiste, which had been commanded by Jean de Surville, and which sank in Doubtless Bay in 1769. Two anchors were found by Kelly Tarlton in 1974. These photographs show the first anchor (and the second?). Also a photograph of the former cray boat the Miss Akaroa, probably at Napier. Description: Album of photographs taken by James Valentine & Sons, circa 1880s-1900s. Most of the images have a caption printed into the photograph, and many also have a hand-written caption beneath. At some point many of the photographs have been removed from their slots, and others have been placed in the wrong slot so that the subject and caption on the photograph does not match with the caption below. Places are listed above. There are five photographs of Maori, three of women, two of chiefs. The names given are difficult to identify, having complicated spelling, and the captions on photographs have faded in some cases. They include "Maori wahine Ngareti"; "Maori chief Hoera Watene"; "Maori chiefs Panapa Tenihotiti and Topopoki" and "Maori wahine Huihana?".
