Description: Postcards, chiefly of Australia, including Tasmania, Adelaide, Queensland, New South Wales, with several showing various tin mines in Tasmania. There is a section of New Zealand postcards in the middle of the album, many taken by an Australian photographic company "Charles H Kerry & Co", labelled "Series 53. Hot Lakes District, New Zealand". These images are tinted, and include views of the Huka Falls, the Pink and White Terraces, Waiotapu, Ohinemutu, Whakarewarewa, Lakes Waikaremoana and Taupo, and the Aratiatia Rapids. The NZ images also include views of the Mount Cook region of the South Island, including Franz Josef Glacier, Hooker Glacier, Mounts Darwin, Sefton and Cook, and Lakes Te Anau and Wakatipu. Description: Album of photographs collected by Rev G E Mason on a trip around the world in 1885-1886. Comprises photographs of California, Tasmania, Sydney, Ceylon, Egypt and New Zealand. In 1884 the Bishop of Lichfield recieved a request from the bishops of Christchurch and Auckland, New Zealand, to send clergy to conduct missions in their dioceses. To this end he invited Rev G E Mason, and Rev Charles Bodington to do the job. The two clegymen left Liverpool for the United States on the 4th of July 1885, spent a summer in New Zealand, and returned to England in September 1886. Description: Shows a party of explorers camped by a rough wooden shelter in the left foreground, with a campfire burning. One figure approaches the group carrying a load of firewood on his back. In the centre distance Mt Ngauruhoe erupts. The left side shows the puia or hot springs on Mt Tongariro, and at the right is Mt Ruapehu with "snow in patches". A note beside Mt Ruapehu says "Southern peak is called Para te tai taonga - Shield from the South wind". Puke Onaki is also marked. Other Titles - Frontispiece Extended Title - From his "Sketchbook of copies from originals by James Coutts Crawford" [1860-1880], page [2-3 A version of this image was reproduced by Fergusson & Mitchell, Dunedin. See E-296-q-012-1, "View of the great central volcanic chain from the Ruamata Plains at the entrance of the Whanganui Bush". Another version was used as a frontispiece for Crawford's "Recollections of travel in New Zealand and Australia ...", London, Trubner, 1880. Another version of this image, in watercolour, is at A-229-046. Notes attached to the description of that images state: "The trip was in January / February 1862 and the Europeans depicted are Crawford himself and Samuel Deighton, and possibly "poor Biggs who was afterwards killed at Poverty Bay" (p. 134), since Crawford mentions that he joined Crawford and Deighton for part of the journey and there are three Europeans shown". The original sketch was made around 1861-1862. However, the word "frontispeice" [sic] indicates that the idea may have already existed for this image being a frontispiece in Crawford's "Recollections of travel in New Zealand and Australia ...", London, Trubner, 1880. Description: New Zealand scenes including thermal areas in the North Island, and river, mountain and roading scenes in the South Island, taken by various identified and unidentified photographers between about the 1880s and 1900s. Two photographers, Josiah Martin and Patrick Thomas Malaghan took most of the images. Other identified photographers include Edmund Wheeler, F. Finch, A.J. Iles, Charles Spencer, Edward Le Grice, J.V. (James Valentine), and Ross (Photographer, Invercargill). Several of the unidentified photographers are listed under their initials only, and include one with the initials T.S.M (or S.T.M. in a monogram), also A.A.B., R.G., Rooney, Luney (?), and L.M. A large number of those taken by Patrick Malaghan show Skippers Road and the Shotover River, with Pinchers Bluff, Huttons Cutting, Hell's Gate, and Skippers Creek. Thermal areas in the North Island show the Pink and White Terraces before the 1886 eruption of mount Tarawera, and also a number taken after the eruption, including the remnants of Te Ariki Pa. A large number also show various geysers, mud pools and hot springs. One method of crossing rivers is shown with the Hooker Wire Bridge (or Hooker Cage) and a "chair" travelling across a wire in Skippers over the Shotover River.
