His approach is so soft that they ignore him. Context: refers to the 1981 South African rugby tour of New Zealand. Prime Minister Robert Muldoon made it clear that the government would not allow political interference in sport in any form in spite of the signing of the Gleneagles Agreement that promised to discourage contact and competition between signing countries and teams or individuals from South Africa. The deputy prime minister, Brian Talboys wrote to Ces Blazey, the NZRFU chairman, expressing concern that a tour was even being considered. The petition, organised by the Green and Labour parties, calling for a referendum on asset sales fell short of the required number of names. Since the government, on past form, would ignore the results of any ensuing referendum, the insistence on the validity of a petition for a referendum seemed to many to be pointless. In 2008, when Jones was Minister of Immigration, he approved the citizenship application of Chinese businessman William Yan who was later charged with making false declarations. On 23 May 2012, Jones stood down from his shadow portfolios while an investigation took place.
