Description: Shows four-masted steamship, the "Surrey", filled with soldiers, and flying flags from all masts. A paddle steamer is stationed on her near side, and there are two more at the left of the picture. There are three other steamships further away at the right, and many sailing boats and rowing boats on the water. One rowing boat has a rowing team in rowing outfits, and some near boats contain ladies with parasols. The setting may be Auckland Harbour, with North Head seen in the right background. Crump, Douglas :Photographs of the Second World War

Description: This album was compiled by Second Lieutenant Spencely Noel Stanley Crump. It is a record of his time as a soldier in the New Zealand army during the Second World War. The record begins with photographs taken while training at Ngaruawahia Camp in September 1939. He and his company were transported to Egypt on the "Orion" where they underwent training at Maadi Camp. Also recorded are the rest and recreational facilities at the camp, as well as those at Helwan Camp, and trips to the pyramids. In 1940 he was with the army campaigning and preparing defences in the Western Desert. He was also sent to the Middle East Weapon Training School in Sarafand near Tel Aviv of which there are photographs as well as others of Palestine and Jerusalem. In 1941 he was sent to Greece and Crete. This part of the album also contains a page of photographs taken from a captured German paratrooper's camera. Following the campaigns in Greece and Crete, Crump returned to Egypt and took part in the war in Libya. There are several pages of photographs of Cairo and its citizens. Others are of nurses and patients at the British General Hospital at Geneifa, and the New Zealand General Hospital at Helwan where Crump went as a result of contracting pneumonia and developing infections in his wounds. In 1942 he returned to New Zealand on the hospital ship "Oranji". There are five pages of photographs taken on this trip. In New Zealand he was sent to the Soldiers Hospital in Rotorua for treatment. In 1943 he married. The album is well documented throughout, and most of Crump's many military associates are identified. A container of letters written by Crump while he was overseas was also donated with the album. The letters have been transferred to Manuscripts and Archives. In 1934 Spencely Noel Stanley Crump was a member of the New Zealand team to the Empire Games in London where he won a bronze medal in swimming. George as a volunteer in the artillery at Wellington taking part in training and activities supporting the Home of Compassion. There are some photographs dating from World War I and World War II, but the largest group relate to the ship 'Janey Seddon' and her use by the Fort Dorset Garrison for towing shell practice targets into place. Description: Album compiled by Frederic Kingsford of 23rd Reinforcements Auckland Infantry Regiment, A Company, ca 1919. It is a pictorial record of his tours around Britain and Ireland before embarking on the 'Tainui' for his return journey to New Zealand. The return journey by way of Panama, included a stop over at Norfolk, Virginia, USA, and another at Colon, Panama, before passing through the canal. The British section of the album includes shots of a regatta held on the river at Walton on Thames where the New Zealand Hospital and depot was located. There are photographs of the clergy and the Royal family leaving Westminster Abbey after the Memorial service for overseas fallen, 14 May 1919. Others show the Australian and New Zealand stands at the Henley Regatta where the Australians won the Kings Cup from Oxford. Finally about four days before leaving for New Zealand he attended the Peace Procession at Glasgow (4 August 1919) in which colonial troops took part. The Tainui cleared Plymouth Sound bound for North America on the 8 August 1919. South African war album

Description: Photographs of the North Island Regiment of the New Zealand Army 8th Contingent in preparation for leaving on the troopship Surrey to fight in the South African War. These photographs were taken by Alfred Jones & Co. mostly in Auckland. They include views of speeches by Richard John Seddon, and General Babington in Auckland., and the departure of the Surrey from Auckland. Other images show the Surrey in Wellington Harbour, rowing eights in the harbour and the Contingent's military camp in Newtown. Two views show warships in Wellington Harbour and a decorated gateway in the city for the Duke of York's visit to New Zealand. There are a number of views of the processions and ceremonies for the funeral of Cecil Rhodes in Cape Town. Richard Seddon's visit to the Hudson's Soap Works in Liverpool is shown in several photographs taken by an unidentified photographer. Page 45 shows a "review at Pretoria" at which there was a "presentation of V.C.s and also a Royal Humane Society medal to Sergt. Cassidy N.Z.M.R. by Lord Roberts". The information is hand-written over the photograph as a Christmas greeting. Inserted in an envelope is a sheet of paper with the signatures of "Colonel Wyndham and the Officers of the Imperial Representative Corps". (Colonel Wyndham was with the 21st Lancers). Description: Volume one of 'The 9.5 am' Feb 1902 to Jan 1903. Contains whimsical articles about political and 'colonial' life. Includes jokes, poems, extracts, and illustrations. In an inscription on the inside cover of this volume, Johannes Andersen describes himself as "Editor, article writer, anecdotist, P.D. et hoc gen an". Includes images of people, buildings and landscapes in the Canterbury, Otago and Southland Regions including: - The Canterbury Provincial Council Buildings captioned as "Offices of the 9.5 am". - Pigeon Bay, Banks Peninsula. - Several photographs of F M B Fisher who "left with the 19th contingent April 19, 1902" and a poem about Fisher leaving for the South African War, 1899-1902 (aka Boer War) titled 'A Farewell'. Also an image of "The Tenth Contingent passing City Council Chambers". Pages 81-83 and 95-98 of this volume features 'Tramps Abroad' written by Fisher, relating to his experiences of the South African War. - The 'Onawe', 'Fleet Wing', and 'Zephyr' yachts. Captioned as "At Lyttelton Regatta Day" (located between p35 and 36). - "The editor and his assistants. No 4 going to print" which features Andersen and other men working on issue 4 of the '9.5 am' (located between p37 and 38). - A 'Travellers' Notes' article relating to Culverden, and a hand-drawn coloured map of the area surrounding Culverden, which includes the Wairau and Pahau Rivers, and the towns of Culverden, Rotheram, St Leonards and Cheviot. - A full-page coloured hand-drawn cartoon titled 'A fantod. Drawn from life' which includes images of a devil, snakes and spiders, and text "D.T [in German DER TEUFEL]" (between p48 and 49). - A garden scene, including three women, captioned as "Opposite Mile Road, near Stanmore Bridge". - Waimakariri from bed North of Otarama, and Waimakariri from bank near Otarama. - A coloured hand-drawn cartoon captioned "Our special artist at Sumner. Who is it?" featuring a man with a very long nose, upon which are dangled a bunch of carrots. The man is riding a small donkey. - A photograph of Johannes Andersen 'Our fighting editor'. - The Southern Alps captioned 'The backbone of New Zealand'. - 'Land sale at Darfield' featuring men inside a wooden building. - Images of the Avon River. - The Post Office building in Ashburton. - Eight photographs of Hanmer and the surrounding area, including images of the Sanitorium. - A section titled 'Southward Ho!' which includes photographs of Port Chalmers, the 'Mararoa' steam ship, and 'Falls on Fraser River (Stewarts Island)'. - An article relating to the 52nd Anniversary of the Canterbury Province, located at p114 of the volume (Jan 1, 1903). It includes a photograph of some stone and wooden buildings captioned as "'The Ark'. A specimen of archaic architecture".
