Tramping in the Rimutaka and Tararua ranges and a trip to the West Coast

Description: Opens with a group of men on a tramp into the valley of the Orongorongo River in the southern Rimutaka Ranges. Included are views of the river and surrounding mountains, in particular Mount Matthews which they climbed posing for a photograph at the Mt Matthews trig station. There are views in the native forest and one looking over the Wainuiomata Valley. One image shows a group of men standing on the Fernside Railway Station labled as the "Mt Hector Party". This probably relates to a group of photographs later in the album recording a tramp in the Taraua Ranges. A group of five photographs records a trip to the Dawson Falls on Mount Egmont. There are views of the road leading to the falls through native forest, the group sitting on a huge rock below the falls, and the falls themselves. The other images in this group show the party on the Mountain, and loaded onto a cart at Eltham. Two pages of views of Days Bay, Lower Hutt, showing individual houses, Croyden School, and coastal scenes. A surveying trip to Kapiti Island. Views of the western cliff face of the island, the caretaker's house and surroundings, a tame deer, nautilus shells, and H E Girdlestone standing beside an 8 inch micrometer on a tripod. Views of the Volcanic Plateau showing Mounts Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe, and Tongariro and the surrounding plains. The departure of the Main Expeditionary Force from Wellington during the First World War. The focus of these images is on the transports moored at the wharves, and the two escorting warships, the Japanese "Ibuki" and the British H M S "Minotaur", in the harbour. A group of women playing golf on the Waiwhetu golf links Family and friends at Eastbourne. Trip to the West Coast and the glaciers. Views of the main road south of Ross passing through heavy native forest, the Franz Josef Glacier and people climbing its ice fields, Mount Tasman, the Toaroha Rapids, and the Fox Glacier. Description: Album of photographs taken by Percy James William Simmons of the 15th Reinforcements of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, 1916-1917. Includes scenes on the troop ship 'Ulimaroa' en route to Plymouth, Sling Camp and surrounding villages, Messines, and London and Edinburgh on leave. Percy Simmons, son of Edgar and Harriet Simmons of Taumarunui, was engaged to Elsa Bass, a teacher. Hansen family : Papers

Description: Estate papers of W F Hansen and his father Anders. These include correspondence, diaries, autograph books, insurance papers, accounts, property papers, papers re British & Continental Film Company Ltd, 1920s. The diaries of Elizabeth Hansen, 1928-1932, 1954-1959, 1962, 1964, contain brief daily entries describing her domestic activities, weather conditions, involvement in community work and the Methodist Church. The early diaries were kept while the Hansens were in Featherston (the period immediately following their marriage). From 1954, after Fred Hansen died, Elizabeth lived at Masterton. Included in some of the diaries are newspaper clippings which report on church and community affairs. Contains letters by Anne Hansen aboard the `Rangitata', in England and Ireland to Fred and Lizzie Hansen in Masterton, New Zealand. Anne describes her daily life and travel and discusses family matters. Also contains a letter from Lena Cook (nee Hansen) while on holiday in Melbourne and a letter from an ex-soldier Elyabill Harrold to Fred Hansen following Fred's return from World War One. See ATL-Group-00334 for photographic material relating to the Hansen family. William Frederick Hansen's father, Anders Hansen was a lighthouse keeper. Fred Hansen was born at Cape Saunders, Westport. He was a tunneller in World War One. Elizabeth and Fred Hansen lived at Featherston and later moved to Masterton where Fred died in 1953. Includes portraits of Peter McIntyre Crawford, Douglas Vallance Hosking (husband of R G Hosking), Keith Melvyn Little, and other unidentified subjects. Features two photographs dated April 1924, one of Wellington taken from on board the HMS 'Hood', and another showing HMS 'Hood' on arrival at Wellington Harbour. Description: Photographic prints collected by Lancely Treadwell comprising: -two group portraits of men in army uniform, relating to Bob Davidson's service during World War I, taken circa 1914 and 1915 by unidentified photographers. One shows a group in Egypt with a pyramid and a sphynx in the background behind the men. -Parade on Courtenay Place/Cambridge Terrace, Wellington, circa 1930, taken by Frank Giles Barker from the site of what is the Embassy Theatre in 2014. One of the floats is a locomotive. The donor said Davidson was from Feilding. The Davidson recorded in the name authority by the archivist is the only Robert Davidson on the Centotaph database that is listed as being from Feilding. He is not identified in the photographs. The name M A Bassett features as an inscription on one of the prints but this name is not known to the donor. Description: One photograph album and negatives taken by Stanley Gadfield Aglionby Burrowes between 1915 and about 1920. Most of the images relate to World War I in Egypt and the Middle East where Burrowes served with the Wellington Mounted Rifles. Accompanying negatives are of the Middle East but also of Hawera, where Burrowes lived before enlisting, and moved back to after his return. These include general overviews of the town, the park, rotunda and water tower and photos of his family, including Emma Elizabeth Jones, who he married in 1920. Also includes: one leather bound album with pages containing notes by Burrowes about the negatives (since removed for storage), and a medal (1914-1915 Star) presented posthumously to Edwin Fitzherbert (Bertie) Burrowes. Description: One album of photographs and postcards, probably compiled by Elizabeth Porteous of the NZANZ (New Zealand Army Nursing Service) who was awarded the ARRC (Associate Royal Red Cross). These are mainly postcards of her travels in England and Scotland during World War I. Also contains some images related to nursing work. The photographs relating to military nursing work include group portraits of patients and staff at a military hospital, two taken during Christmas celebrations. There are also two photographs of an interior of a large industrial building being used as a dormitory, probably to house soldiers. Subjects and locations are all unidentified. Postcards include: Views of Edinburgh, Scotland, include Edinburgh Castle, Craigmillar Castle, The Abbey Strand, St Giles Cathedral, the Palace of Holyroodhouse and Arthur's Seat, Queen Margaret's Chapel, and the 'audience room' at the former residence of John Knox.
