Description: Album of tourist views of New Zealand and the sub-Antarctic Islands, chiefly taken by John Richard Morris, Jnr, circa 1890s. Places and subjects listed above where identified. The Sub-Antarctic Island views are all of native flora and fauna of the different islands, listed on the images as mollymawks, albatrosses, sea lions, crested penguins and erect-crested penguins On page 32 there is a view of the SS Knight Templar leaving Lyttelton on February 17, 1900, taking about 260 soldiers and 300 horses of the 3rd Contingent "the New Zealand Roughriders" to Durban, en route to fight in the South African War. D. Burt, two images of a church (one is the Roman Catholic Church at Rangiaowhia), and one of a car behind a tree. - Two images of flowers [lillies, and bottle brush?]. - A hand-coloured image of S. They are carrying a mixture of muskets and spears, and dressed in mixed European and Maori clothing. They are observed by a group of European and Maori men and women, with the artist's self portrait sketching near the centre in the foreground. Description: British infantry and cavalry on the march on a road cleared through dense bush The image is a reworking of the Illustrated London News image published in 1863. It may have been prepared as a book illustration. It appears to be a proof copy and is on a blank sheet with no surrounding text and is markedly smaller than the Illustrated London News version, which is 160 x 235 mm. Another copy of the I. L. N. version is held in E-372-f-003-2. The image was formerly catalogued by the Library as Troops passing through wooden country along the Great South Road; also as Shepherd Bush. The derivation from the Illustrated London News was not recognised. Other Titles - Former titles - Troops passing through wooded country along the Great South Road. Description: Shows a Maori man and woman at the far left, standing outside a whare with carved tekoteko figure. Behind the whare is a palisade and to the far right a waka is being launched into the sea. This work has also been know as 'Meeting house and stockade' A third foreground figure has been pencilled in beside the couple at the left, but has not been completed. This painting was used as the basis for 'Stranger's house (Houraki Pah)', Plate 5 in R A Oliver's 'A series of lithographic drawings from sketches in New Zealand' (London, Dickinson Bros, 1852) Title from letter of authentication on backing board (accompanies painting in same folder). Description: Shows a view across a river, to the settlement of Ngaruawahia on the far side, with the Māori King's residence, tents and huts and a red flag flying. A Māori man in traditional cloak surveys the scene from the centre foreground holding a taiaha. There is a paddlesteamer in the river at the right. Description: Ngāti Hauā group at Te Wai o Turongo meeting house at Waharoa, near Matamata. Seated in the centre of the group is Hohua Ahowhenua (d 1889). Photograph taken between 1880 and 1887 by Hemus & Hanna of Auckland. Other - Note that 1/2-018166 is a similar image This negative is part of a sequence which includes a portrait of Hohua Ahowhenua which was commissioned by Josiah Clifton Firth. The original negatives for these images, which are now part of the Alexander Turnbull Library collections, are dry plates, which would indicate that they were taken after 1880, but before Firth's departure from his Matamata estate in July 1887. In "Nation making" (pp 260-261) Firth states that after his departure Hohua was abandoned in the runanga house by his people. This photograph would appear to have been taken before this. The negatives form part of the collection of Herman Schmidt. Schmidt in 1904 took over the studio of Hemus & Hanna, who are therefore most likely to have taken the images. Description: Shows a Maori whare with porch and doorway, and a carved figure at the front end of the ridgepole. A man and woman in the left foreground, and three others figures stand or sit at the front of the whare. At the extreme right, two figures take a canoe to the water's edge. Another whare with a thatched roof appears in the bushes near the water. All figures are dressed in a mixture of traditional and European clothing, some in cloaks, some in blankets over shirts or dresses.
