Description: Contains copies of speeches by King Tawhiao and others, on the occasion of the laying down of arms in 1881, together with a narrative account of this and related events. Also a listing of Kingitanga supporters in the Hauraki and Bay of Plenty, where hapu have signed over their land to the mana of King Tawhiao; the list is of the hapu affiliated to the Kingitanga, the names of members of the hapu and the rohe of the hapu. Contains copies of letters from King Tawhiao to various politicians warning them not to heed the land claims of various people with regard to the Poutama block near Mokau, because he controlled the land . The item also contains a `doomsday book' of Kingitanga supporters in the Hauraki and Bay of Plenty, where hapu have signed over their land to the mana of King Tawhiao; the book contains a list of hapu that affiliated to the Kingitanga, the names of members of the hapu and the rohe of the hapu. Also contains addresses by various local body authorities in Waikato to King Tawhiao, to mark the occasion of his visit to them; there is a printed item about `Ko te korero o te haerenga mai o Kiingi Tawhiao ki Akarana', information about land sales at Horahora and Maungatautari (with lists of vendors), and notes about the relationship of the Kingitanga and the Kotahitanga in the 1890s. Description: Shows Tamati Waka Nene, standing in flax cloak, with rifle held across his body. Probably painted around the time of the Northland wars, 1845-46, in Auckland or Northland. Cf two very similar portraits, also by Merrett, of Tamati Waka Nene held by Waihi Arts Centre and Museum and by Auckland Public Library. Has also been attributed to Benjamin William Rawson Trafford, in Wanganui from 1847 Attribution based on style. Date based on date of Auckland Public Library version. However the work is also very similar to a lithograph attributed to Benjamin Trafford 'Tamati Waka Nene, Chief of the Ngapui'; 'Lieut B Trafford del', published in Power, J T.
