Description: Map showing the East Cape, Bay of Plenty, Tauranga, Northern Hawkes Bay and just south of Taupo. Shows Te Kooti's approximate route, and direction (arrows on line) and his engagements with the Hauhau people. Stops at certain pa are dated, some added text (before photocopy) e.g. "Final escape to King Country", "Visit to Takangamutu". Key stops included Opape, Tologa Bay, Turanga, Whakatane, Rotorua, Te Pourere, Puketapu. The linking areas for all these points was the Urewera country. Te Kooti was a Rongowhakaata leader, military leader, prophet, religious founder, pursued by colonial forces, eventually took refuge in the King Country where Te Kooti remained until pardoned in 1883. Description: Accounts of life in Wellington, Manawatu, Gisborne and Taranaki, and many political recollections and comments. There is a chapter on old-time racing, including the days before the book-maker was banned. There are also references to visiting celebrities, among them Mark Twain, Frank Bullen and Paderewski, and memories of many theatrical shows. Included is a summary of the career of the late Henry Hayward, a pioneer in cinema entertainment in NZ. Source of title - Transcribed He was a store-keeper, law clerk and land agent; member of Parliament for Hawera for six years; mayor of Hawera for thirteen years and member of other local bodies in Taranaki. He was a noted runner; played Rugby football for these provinces; and as owner and spectator was keenly interested in horse-riding. He was one of the founders of a number of clubs and societies, including the Philatelic Society and the Polynesian Society. Description: Notebook containing research notes relating to Maori history (particularly food-gathering practices) from around the Taupo area. It seems that Cowan has used Maori Land Court minute books for his information as he attributes the information to land block names and case names, informant names and dates. Some of the people he mentions are: H Tumatara Pio of Te Teko (aged 77 in 1900), Te Waaka Tamaira (Rangatira block, 1884), Hitiri Te Paerata (mentioned several times), Tini Waata, Wineti Paranihi, Aperahama Werewere, Te Heueheu Tukino, and Te Rangitahau. The book also contains information given to him from Hare Hongi about Maori astronomy, makutu, and the moari [swing]. Contains whakapapa, karakia and waiata.
