Description: Album of photographs, probably taken by George William Barltrop, chiefly taken on a tour around the South Island. The first images relate to an area around Wellington, including Waiwhetu and Wainuiomata, including scenes of the Wainuiomata Reservoir. Two photographs taken in a park show three women wearing hats, full-length outfits, and carrying umbrellas, the "McNabs". One photograph shows a group of men and women, members of a camera club. The tour aound the South Island travels from Sheffield, down to the Otira Gorge, up to Lake Brunner and Inangahua, past Murchison, through Longford. In Wellington Harbour the steamship Ophir is sailing out, with people standing on the wharf in the foreground. Also in Wellington, is a large group portrait of men associated with the Missions to Seamen, gathered together on Labour Day 1901. Five photographs are taken around Otaki, one a pastoral scene, and two of three young Maori people (a young woman and a young girl in two scenes, with a second young girl in the third scene); a water mill; and a group of four people having a picnic in a field (two women (one obscured) and a young boy on the left, and a man with a bandaged hand on the right). The last few scenes are again of the South Island, at Temuka, Otago Harbour, Dunedin (including the Octagon), and a tram belonging to the Roslyn Tramway Company with a group of men on the front cab, and three standing in front. Description: An extensive view of Kakanui beach, looking out to sea from the low hills just behind the beach. Moeraki is marked on the southernmost point on the right and the Kakanui River is also indicated to the right. Two small ticks on the top of the hill to the right indicate the location of 'a native garden out of which several Moa bones had been dug'. Three ticks, just south of the river mouth mark the spot where Wills' drawing no. 11 (A-228-009) was taken. 'The dotted lines are boundaries of native reserves'. Description: Shows 14 views of Maori domestic life, including tools, clothing and household receptacles. Accompanying page of text (C-170-002-1) lists the numbered items as follows: 1. Mode of fishing with nets on Lake Taupo: the fish, which are still small, are caught in a seine with very fine meshes, and a pole about 20 feet long, with tufts of grass fastened at the end, to drive the fish into the net. 2. A fishing weir, or eel pah, on the river Mokau. 3. Wooden fish-hook. 4. Fish-hook generally in use, made of wood, with a layer of pawa [i.e. paua], or pearl shell (Haliotis), and the hook formed of human bone. A feather of the kivi kivi (Apteryx Australis) is fastened at the extremity. The lines are of flax and, as these hooks dangle astern of the canoes, the glittering appearance of the pawa attracts the fish. 5. Kupenga, or eel trap, formed of twigs, from Mokau. 6. Ko, a wooden spade, for rooting up ferns, and preparing the ground for plantations. 7. A pestle for beating flax, formed of volcanic trap. 8. Wooden flute, one of the orifices of which is tattooed to resemble the lips of a woman. 9. Bark bucket, and calabashes for holding water: the orifices of these latter are also tattooed in a similar manner. 10. Ornamented flax basket for household purposes. 11. E kumeti, ancient wooden bowl for kumeras, from the deserted pah of Otawhao, near Waipa, eight feet in circumference. 12. and 13. Flax sandals from Otago, in the Southern Island. 14. Description: Photographs of New Zealand, taken by various photographers. Some are unidentified, but many are taken by the Burton Brothers, J V (James Valentine), Tuttle & Co, for Simpson & Co., and Hart, Campbell & Co. In the North Island, a large number of photographs show the area around Mount Tarawera before and after the volcanic eruption in 1886. There are a number showing the huge deposits of mud and ash which covered the area, with views of the landscape and of ruined buildings, followed by scenes of the Pink and White Terraces, before the eruption. On page 8, there is a view of Ranana (London), on the Wanganui River with the caption, "Maori village similar to those overwhelmed by the eruption". Other scenes in the North Island were taken in Auckland City, Ohinemutu, Rotokakahi, and Whakarewarewa, Ti Eke [i.e. Tieke] on the Wanganui River, and one of Wellington City taken from Mount Victoria. South Island views include many around the main lakes, including Wakatipu, Wanaka, Manapouri, Queenstown and Hawea; Milford Sound and Mitre Peak; the Otira Gorge; Kawarau Gorge and Bridge; Oamaru; Port Chalmers; and Dunedin. Views of gold mining areas in Otago include excavation sluiced out by hydrants at St Bathans, and the miners' towns of Naseby with the river choked with tailings, and Nokomai. The two clegymen left Liverpool for the United States on the 4th of July 1885, spent a summer in New Zealand, and returned to England in September 1886. Papers of the Blue Spur and Gabriel's Gully Consolidated Gold Mining Company 1866-1899. W Leo Buller's correspondence re the gift of Buller's Maori collection to the nation, 1911-1914. Family papers, land deed certificates, clippings. The Maori letters arise mainly from Buller's law practice and deal mainly with land court work. Some of the earlier letters are probably to his father, James Buller. A H Turnbull and Elsdon Best both appear to have worked on the letters. Best did not apparently find them useful to his research, but they will be useful to anyone interested in land matters in the Manawatu and Horowhenua areas.
